What “play games in browser” means

Browser games used to mean small Flash titles. Today, engines compiled to WebAssembly and rendered with WebGL let full games run in a tab: fan ports of classics, remakes of modern shooters, emulated console games, and studios’ own web editions. You click Play, the game streams in, and that’s it.

PlayGamesInBrowser lists those games in one place and checks them for you. Every page tells you who made the browser version, what it was originally released on, how big the first download is, which controls it uses, and whether it works on phones and Chromebooks. Games that need special browser features open in our full-screen player; games whose makers prefer it open on their own site.

Browser games: common questions

Can you really play full PC and console games in a browser?

Yes. Developers now compile game engines to WebAssembly and WebGL, so ports of classics like Doom, Quake and Half-Life, remakes of modern shooters, and official browser editions all run in Chrome, Edge or Firefox without installing anything.

Do I need to download anything?

No installer is needed. The game streams its files into your browser the first time you play, which can be a few megabytes or, for large 3D games, 30 MB or more. When we have measured it, the download size is listed on the game page.

Will these games run on a Chromebook or a school laptop?

Many will. Each game page says whether we tested it on a Chromebook, and the Chromebook collection lists only games that worked there.

Are browser games safe?

Games run inside the browser sandbox, so they cannot install software on your computer. Every page says who made the browser version and whether it is official, and games that stop working are marked as down.
