About Super Monkey Ball
Super Monkey Ball started life in 2001 as Monkey Ball, an arcade cabinet from Sega’s Amusement Vision studio with a banana-shaped joystick. An expanded version became a launch title for the GameCube later that year, notable as Sega’s first game for a Nintendo home console.
The idea is simple and hard to put down. You don’t move the monkey directly; you tilt the whole stage, and the monkey rolls inside its clear ball toward the goal before the timer runs out. Bananas along the way add to your score, and narrow ledges punish any overcorrection.
How it runs in your browser
This version is a fan project by TwilightPB, built from the SMB1 decompilation, a community effort to reconstruct the game’s source code. It opens on monkeyball-online.pages.dev in a new tab, and there is nothing to install.
You can play course mode and practice on your own, or go online against other players. Progress saving isn’t listed, so treat each visit as a fresh run.
Controls and devices
On a keyboard, these are the known keys:
- Tilt the stage: WASD or the arrow keys
- Reset the stage: R
- Skip the stage: N
A controller also works, and an analog stick gives finer control over the tilt than keys do, which helps on the tighter stages later in a course. The game also runs on phones, so you can play a few stages away from your computer.
Tips
Small, steady inputs beat big swings. The ball keeps its momentum, so let go of the tilt a little before you reach a narrow section instead of correcting at the last second. If you keep falling off the same stage, press R to retry right away, or N to skip ahead and come back to it later.
Practice mode is the place to learn a stage that keeps beating you before you try it again in a full course.
