About RuneScape Classic

RuneScape first went live in January 2001 as a Java game that ran in a web browser, created by Andrew Gower with help from his brother Paul and developed by Jagex. In its medieval fantasy world you train skills, take on quests, fight monsters, trade and meet other players, all at your own pace.

The earliest version, later renamed RuneScape Classic, looked and played very differently from the RuneScape that followed. Characters were flat sprites standing on simple 3D landscapes, and the rules had quirks that later versions dropped, such as a fatigue meter that eventually forces you to rest before you can keep training. Jagex replaced it with a new engine in 2004 and kept the Classic servers running for veterans until shutting them down in 2018. Fan-run servers like this one keep that early version playable.

How it runs in your browser

The game plays on this page, embedded from runescapeclassic.gold. There is no download and no separate launcher: you create an account inside the game and log in.

Your character lives on the fan server rather than in your browser, so it is tied to that account and to the server staying online. Because this is a community server, its rules, population and long-term future are up to the people who run it, not Jagex.

Controls and devices

RuneScape Classic is a point-and-click game: you click to walk, fight, pick things up and talk to characters, and you type to chat. That simple control scheme is part of why it works on phones as well as computers, and the server is listed as supporting both. Controllers aren’t supported.

On a small screen, menus and items can be fiddly to tap, so a computer with a mouse is still the more comfortable choice for long sessions.

Who it’s for

Players who remember the original will find the version they started on. If you play Old School RuneScape today, Classic shows how much the game changed even before the 2007 snapshot that Old School is based on. It is slow and old-fashioned by modern standards, and that is exactly the appeal.
