About Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Released in 2005, Need for Speed: Most Wanted was developed by EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts as the ninth game in the series, following Underground 2. It left the neon night races of the Underground games for the daylight streets of Rockport, a fictional city, and put police pursuits at the center of everything.

The story is a climb up the Blacklist, a ranking of the city’s fifteen most notorious street racers. To challenge each one, you win races and build up your notoriety with the police, all on the way to winning back the car taken from you at the start.

How it runs in your browser

Lauta (@LautaTWT) recompiled the PlayStation 2 version to WebAssembly and WebGPU, so the game runs as browser code instead of inside a traditional emulator. It opens on nfsmwested.lauta.site in a new tab.

Instead of one big download, the game data is fetched on demand as you drive, and the initial download is only around 10 MB. Since the rest of the game arrives during play, a steady connection helps.

WebGPU is required. Use a recent Chrome or Edge on a computer with a graphics card. Phones aren’t supported, and a browser without WebGPU won’t start the game.

This build is single-player only, with no online play. Progress saving isn’t listed, so don’t count on resuming a Blacklist run on a later visit.

Controls and devices

You can drive with a keyboard or a controller. Analog steering on a controller gives finer control during long pursuits, but either option works. No key list is published, so check the game’s own controls screen.

Who it’s for

It fits players who remember the original on PS2 or PC and want a quick return to Rockport without setting up an emulator, along with anyone curious about the game that made police chases a series staple. Its predecessor, Need for Speed: Underground 2, also has browser ports listed on this site.

Why does Need for Speed: Most Wanted need WebGPU?

This port was recompiled to draw its graphics with WebGPU, so it needs a browser that supports it. A recent Chrome or Edge on a computer with a graphics card is the safe choice.

How big is the download?

Only about 10 MB downloads when you start. The rest of the disc data streams from the cloud as you play.

Can I play online or on a phone?

No. This port is single-player and isn’t supported on phones.
