About Burnout 3: Takedown

Criterion Games built Burnout 3: Takedown around one idea: driving dangerously should pay off. Released in 2004 by Electronic Arts as the third game in the series, it fills your boost meter for near misses, drifting and driving into oncoming traffic, and boost makes you much faster.

Its signature move is the Takedown. Slam a rival into a wall or into traffic until they wreck, and your boost meter fills up and grows longer. Alongside standard races, there are modes built around Takedowns and a Crash mode, where you plow into a busy junction to cause as much damage as you can. The World Tour campaign ties these events together and unlocks faster cars as you go.

How it runs in your browser

This browser version, by Slayoner, runs the PlayStation 2 release of the game. It opens on burnout3.online in a new tab rather than on this page.

It depends on WebGPU, a newer graphics feature that not every browser supports. It needs WebGPU, which in practice means current Chrome or Edge on a PC with working graphics drivers. Phones aren’t supported, and a browser without WebGPU won’t be able to start the game.

You can race solo or online against other players through the same site. Progress saving isn’t listed, so a long World Tour run may need to happen in one sitting.

Controls and devices

A keyboard works, and so does a controller, which is the more natural fit for a game designed around a console pad. Analog steering and throttle make it easier to thread through traffic at full boost. No key list is published, so check the in-game prompts or the host site for the bindings.

Who it’s for

It suits anyone who remembers the PS2 era of arcade racing, and anyone curious why Burnout 3 still turns up on lists of the best racing games ever made. The online races make it worth sharing with a friend who has a capable browser. More games with online play are on our multiplayer page.
