About Halo: Combat Evolved
Halo: Combat Evolved launched alongside the original Xbox in 2001, developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios, and reached Windows and Mac in 2003. You play Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier, fighting with the AI Cortana and the human forces of the UNSC against the Covenant, a theocratic alliance of alien species. The battle centers on Halo, a vast ring-shaped artificial world. Recharging shields, a two-weapon limit and open vehicle combat made it one of the most influential console shooters ever released.
How it runs in your browser
Two fan projects are listed here. Halo CE Mobile opens on its own site in a new tab, and exenu opens in our full-screen player.
Halo CE Mobile, by BanTrev, rebuilds the game from its decompiled code so it runs in a browser on iPhone, Android and PC. Installing it as an app gives you a full-screen, app-like window. The game itself isn’t included: you supply an Xbox disc image of Halo CE from a copy you own. It copies the maps folder from that image into the app’s private storage and doesn’t upload anything. Signing up for a free account unlocks the online side: ranked matchmaking, custom game lobbies, friends and co-op campaign play.
exenu runs Halo PC multiplayer on a computer, with no files of your own needed and room for up to 16 players. It’s the quicker way in if you don’t have a disc image, though it covers multiplayer rather than the campaign and is built for computers.
Controls and devices
Halo CE Mobile is made for phones as well as computers, so you can play it on iPhone or Android. exenu is for computers with a keyboard and mouse. Controller support isn’t listed for either, and neither host publishes a key list, so check each game’s settings once you’re in.
Which one to choose
If you own the game and want the campaign, online co-op or play on a phone, Halo CE Mobile is the fuller option, as long as you can supply the disc image. If you just want to jump into a Halo match on a computer without hunting for files, exenu is simpler. Other Halo browser options are collected on our Halo page.
