About Need for Speed: Underground 2
EA Black Box followed up the first Underground with Need for Speed: Underground 2 in 2004, published by Electronic Arts. It kept the night-time street racing and moved it into Bayview, a city you can drive around freely between events, then leaned hard into car customization, from body kits and paint to neon and audio systems. It was a major hit, selling around 11 million copies worldwide.
How it runs in your browser
Two independent fan projects host the game, and both open on their own sites in a new tab. They are built from different versions of the game, so they behave differently.
Slayoner ports the PlayStation 2 version. You can play solo or online with a friend, using a keyboard or a controller. The site is in Spanish, which can make the menus around the game harder to follow if you don’t read it.
nfsu2.xyz takes a different route: it rebuilds the PC release for WebGPU and runs its own online server. Expect roughly 2.9 GB of game data to come down before your first race, so the first start takes a while. It also requires WebGPU, so use current Chrome or Edge on a PC with working graphics drivers.
Pick nfsu2.xyz if you want the PC version and your setup meets its requirements. Pick Slayoner if you’d rather play the PS2 version or want to set up a race with one friend.
Neither host lists progress saving, so expect each session to start fresh.
Controls and devices
The game supports a keyboard or a controller. Phones aren’t supported, so use a desktop or laptop. No key list is published for either port; check the in-game options for the bindings.
Who it’s for
Underground 2 is a good fit if you enjoyed tuning and styling cars as much as racing them, or if you want to race a friend online without installing anything. Its follow-up, Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005), also has a browser port listed on this site, and more online games are on our multiplayer page.
Is Need for Speed: Underground 2 Free, Safe and Official?
Which Underground 2 port should I pick?
Slayoner’s port is the PS2 version, plays solo or online with a friend, and has a Spanish-language site. nfsu2.xyz is the PC version on WebGPU, with its own online server and a download of about 2.9 GB.
Can I race online?
Yes. Both ports support online play, and nfsu2.xyz runs its own server.
Does it work on a phone?
No. Use a computer. The nfsu2.xyz port also needs a WebGPU browser, such as a recent Chrome or Edge.
