About DOOM II

DOOM II: Hell on Earth is id Software’s 1994 sequel to DOOM, published by GT Interactive for DOS. Hell has spread to Earth, and you fight through it with a bigger arsenal against tougher demons. The sequel added the double-barreled Super Shotgun and ends with the Icon of Sin. Its deathmatch also became a fixture of 1990s multiplayer, when players linked computers over modems and office networks to hunt each other.

How it runs in your browser

This page runs the real DOOM II through Odamex, an open-source Doom engine built for online play, here rebuilt as WebAssembly. It plays right here in the player above, loaded from doom.pieter.com, with nothing to install.

The setup is built around dropping in. When you open it, you join whatever deathmatch map is running at that moment, alongside everyone else who is online, and the host lists no player limit. There’s also a daily match you can turn up for if you’d rather play at a set time with a group.

Save support isn’t listed, which fits a deathmatch server: every round starts fresh.

Controls and devices

You’ll need a computer with a keyboard and mouse. Phones and tablets aren’t supported, and controller support isn’t listed. Key bindings aren’t published here, so check the in-game options once you’re in.

Tips

  • Keep moving. DOOM II deathmatch is fast, and standing still makes you an easy target.
  • Learn where the Super Shotgun appears on each map; it wins most close fights.
  • If the current map is quiet, come back for the daily match.
  • Listen for doors, lifts and pickups. Sound gives away other players long before you see them.

The server suits anyone who played DOOM deathmatch in the 1990s, and newer players who want to see why it caught on. For id Software’s next step in online shooters, see our Quake page, or browse the multiplayer list for more games to play with others.
