About Helltaker

The artist vanripper released Helltaker, a short puzzle game, for free on Steam in 2020. The premise is silly on purpose: the main character wakes up wanting a harem of demon girls and walks straight into hell to find them. Each chapter puts a new demon at the end of a puzzle, followed by a brief conversation where a wrong answer ends badly and sends you back.

The puzzles are top-down and grid-based, in the tradition of Sokoban. Each level gives you a fixed number of moves to reach the goal, and you spend them pushing stone blocks, knocking skeletons aside and stepping around spikes. Run out of moves and the level resets. The whole game usually takes an hour or two, and its stark black, white and red art and the soundtrack by Mittsies helped it spread quickly online.

The browser port was made by shxyder and is hosted on wasm.rip. It plays right here on this page, with nothing to download.

Saving isn’t listed as supported, but Helltaker is short enough to finish in one sitting. The official version is also free on Steam if you’d rather play it there.

Controls and devices

Movement is on the keyboard, one grid square at a time, so a computer is the way to play. Phones and controllers aren’t listed as supported for this port. The exact keys aren’t listed here.

Tips

Count your moves before you commit to a route. Most levels leave little room to spare, so the move counter is the real opponent. If a level goes wrong early, restart it instead of trying to salvage a bad position. It also helps to look at where the blocks and skeletons need to end up, then work backward from the goal. The dialogue choices matter too, so read each demon’s lines before answering.
