First-person shooters were once the last thing you’d expect in a browser. WebAssembly changed that: engines like Xash3D (Half-Life and Counter-Strike 1.6) and the open-source descendants of id Software’s Quake engines now compile to code a browser can run at close to native speed, and WebGL libraries like three.js let developers build new 3D shooters for the web from scratch.
It depends on what you want. For classic competitive play, Counter-Strike 1.6 ports with live servers are hard to beat. For modern visuals, CS2-style remakes like AstraStrike look closest to current shooters. For fast arena action, try Quake III Arena.
Yes. Click inside the game to capture the mouse and press Esc to release it. If a game opens on its developer’s site, mouse capture works there too.
Some may run, but Chromebook support hasn’t been confirmed for most of these games yet. Check the device line on each game’s page, and expect most shooters to need a keyboard and mouse.
