About Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Gray Matter Interactive developed Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Activision published it in 2001, with id Software producing. The campaign casts you as US Army Ranger B.J. Blazkowicz, sent behind enemy lines in World War II to stop a Nazi program that mixes experimental science with the occult.
The multiplayer, built separately by Nerve Software, became just as well known. Axis and Allied teams fight over objectives rather than simple kill counts, and each player picks a class, such as Soldier, Medic, Engineer or Lieutenant, with its own job on the team. Its objective-based design influenced team shooters for years.
How it runs in your browser
This browser version, from pieter.com, takes iortcw, a maintained version of the game’s released engine code, and compiles it to WebAssembly. It plays right here on this page.
It covers the multiplayer side of the game on the classic beach map, mp_beach, where the Allies storm a fortified coastline held by the Axis. Expect a short wait on the first visit while the game data loads, before you can join a match. Since you are playing online against other people, a stable connection matters.
Progress saving isn’t listed, which matters less for multiplayer matches you join, play and leave.
Controls and devices
Use a computer with a keyboard and mouse. Phones aren’t supported, and controller support isn’t listed. The host doesn’t publish a key list on this page, so check the in-game controls menu before your first round.
Tips
- Pick a class that fills a gap on your team. Medics keep an attack going, and Engineers handle objective work such as planting dynamite.
- On the beach map, the Allies need to break through the Axis defenses before they can reach the objective, so attackers do better when they push together.
- Axis players have the high ground at the start. Holding the bunkers and the wall above the sand is the core of a good defense.
- More shooters you can play online are on our multiplayer page.
