About OneShot: World Machine Edition
Future Cat’s OneShot is a puzzle adventure published by Degica. It started life as a free RPG Maker project, grew into a full commercial release in 2016, and was later rebuilt as the World Machine Edition, which reached consoles in 2022 and Steam in 2024.
You guide Niko, a child who wakes up in a strange world that has lost its sun. Niko finds a large lightbulb that stands in for it and has to carry it to the top of a tower to bring light back. Along the way you meet the world’s residents, solve puzzles and slowly learn what kind of place this really is.
What OneShot is best known for is how it treats you, the player. The game addresses you as someone separate from Niko, and some puzzles reach past the usual boundaries of a game. The World Machine Edition runs on a new engine with a new interface and is fully self-contained: puzzles that once relied on files on your real computer now take place on a simulated desktop inside the game.
How it runs in your browser
This is an unofficial port by shayder, hosted on wasm.rip, and it plays right here on this page. There is nothing to install. OneShot is a single-player game, so online play doesn’t come into it, and progress saving isn’t listed for the port. If you close the tab, be prepared to replay some of the story.
Controls and devices
Use a computer with a keyboard and mouse. Phones aren’t supported, and controller support isn’t listed for this port. The host doesn’t publish a key list, so check the in-game prompts and settings when you start.
Who it’s for
OneShot suits players who enjoy story-driven puzzle games with a gentle, melancholy tone, and anyone curious about games that play with the line between the character on screen and the person at the keyboard. It works best if you go in knowing as little as possible, so avoid spoilers and give the puzzles time before looking anything up.
If you finish it here and want the complete experience with dependable saves, the official World Machine Edition is available on Steam and consoles.
