About Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind came out in 2002 for Windows and the original Xbox. You begin as a nameless prisoner released at the small port of Seyda Neen on the island of Vvardenfell, and after that the game mostly leaves you to it. You can chase the main quest about an ancient prophecy, climb the ranks of guilds and Great Houses, or ignore all of it and wander the ash wastes and giant-mushroom forests.

Its rules reward how you play: skills improve as you use them, and you can design a custom class around almost any mix of skills. Many players still consider its world one of the strangest and most memorable Bethesda has made.

The browser version from morrowind.app goes beyond the original in two ways. It runs on phones with on-screen touch buttons, and it adds online play, something the 2002 release never had.

How it runs in your browser

Pressing play opens morrowind.app in a new tab. You don’t need to own the game or supply any files. On a computer, it plays in a normal browser window; on a phone, the site adds touch buttons over the game.

Online, a server browser lists games already running, and you can also start a server of your own for others to find. Playing alone works too.

Saving progress isn’t listed for this version. In an RPG this long, that matters, so check what the game’s own save menu offers before you put hours into a character.

Controls and devices

On a desktop or laptop, use a keyboard and mouse. On a phone, the touch layout stands in for them. Controller support isn’t listed, and the exact key layout isn’t listed here either.

A larger screen helps. Morrowind leans on menus, a journal and an inventory full of small icons, which are easier to manage on a computer than on a phone.

Who it’s for

Morrowind suits patient RPG players who like being dropped into an alien world and left to figure it out. The online mode also makes this a rare chance to explore Vvardenfell alongside other people. For more games you can play together, see our multiplayer list.

No. It’s an unofficial fan port on morrowind.app, not made or endorsed by Bethesda Softworks. It could be taken down if Bethesda asks.

Can I play Morrowind on my phone?

Yes. The browser version runs on phones and adds touch buttons on the screen. A computer is still easier for menus and inventory.

Can I play Morrowind online with friends?

Yes. Pick a game from the in-game server browser, or start your own and have friends connect to it. Solo play is also available.
