About GTA: Vice City

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City came out in 2002 for the PlayStation 2 and later for Windows, developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. You play Tommy Vercetti, fresh out of prison and sent south to a sunny city modeled on 1980s Miami. When a drug deal goes wrong in the first minutes, he has to rebuild from nothing and carve out his own empire.

The game is remembered for its pastel look, its radio stations packed with ’80s music and an open city full of cars, boats and side jobs.

The browser version is a fan port. It is built on reVC, a community reverse-engineering of the game’s code, compiled to WebAssembly so it can run inside a web page.

How it runs in your browser

All three hosts open on their own sites in a new tab rather than inside our page. You don’t need to supply your own copy of the game, and there is nothing to install. The hosts differ in a few useful ways:

  • WASM Arcade is the plain option, with no extra features noted.
  • quenq.com adds save import and export, so you can back up a save file and load it again later.
  • gta.rabisco.net is a port by Alan Nicolas. Its menu is in Portuguese, and saves stay in your browser on that site.

Saving isn’t guaranteed on every host, so pick one of the last two if you plan to work through the story. Saves kept in the browser can disappear if you clear site data or switch devices, which makes exporting a good habit.

Controls and devices

The port works with a controller and is listed as playable on phones as well as computers. Driving and gunfights are much easier with a controller or a mouse than with touch, so a phone is better for short sessions than for long missions.

Tips

The Portuguese menu on gta.rabisco.net is easy to work through if you already know the game, but newcomers may find one of the other two hosts simpler to start with.

Is GTA: Vice City (web port) Free, Safe and Official?

Is this the official GTA: Vice City?

No. It is an unofficial fan port built on the reVC project, and Rockstar Games did not make or approve it. Rockstar sells the official PC version separately.

Does GTA: Vice City in the browser work on a phone?

Yes, the port is listed as working on phones, and it also supports controllers. A controller makes driving and shooting much easier than touch.

Will my progress save?

It depends on the host. quenq.com lets you import and export saves, and gta.rabisco.net keeps saves in your browser, so clearing browser data can wipe them.
