Minecraft and the browser

Minecraft started as a project by Markus “Notch” Persson. It went public in 2009 and formally launched in 2011 under his studio, Mojang, and Microsoft bought Mojang in 2014. Today it’s sold as Java Edition for computers and Bedrock Edition for consoles, phones and Windows, and it’s the best-selling video game of all time. Neither current edition runs in a browser.

The versions listed here

  • Minecraft Classic is the only official option. Mojang released it free in 2019 for the game’s tenth anniversary as a recreation of the 2009 version. It opens on classic.minecraft.net in a new tab, needs no account or download, and has online play for building with friends. It’s creative building only, with a small set of blocks and none of the survival, crafting or mobs of the modern game.
  • Minecraft 1.8.8 (EaglercraftX) is an unofficial fan port of Java Edition 1.8.8, a build of the 2014 Bountiful Update. It opens on wasmarcade.com in a new tab and plays like the Minecraft of that era, with survival and creative modes. Worlds are saved in your browser’s storage on your device. Online play isn’t listed, so treat it as single-player.

The difference comes down to rights. Classic runs on a site Mojang operates and is marked as official. EaglercraftX is closer to the game most people know, but Mojang hasn’t licensed it and has had Eaglercraft projects taken down before, in 2023, so this version could disappear. Neither one asks for your own game files.

Tips for playing Minecraft in a browser

  • Use a computer with a keyboard and mouse. Phone support isn’t listed for either version.
  • For EaglercraftX, stick with one browser profile and avoid private windows. Clearing site data or switching browsers leaves your worlds behind.
  • On a shared or school computer, assume saved worlds may be gone next time, and that some sites may be blocked.
  • For the full modern game, Java and Bedrock Editions are sold by Mojang.
