About Baldi’s Basics Birthday Bash
Baldi’s Basics started in 2018 as a game jam entry by Micah McGonigal, who now releases games as Basically Games. The original, Baldi’s Basics in Education and Learning, parodies the cheap educational software of the 1990s. You wander a school collecting notebooks and answering math problems, and every wrong answer makes Baldi, the smiling teacher, angrier and faster as he comes after you with his ruler.
Birthday Bash is a free spin-off released in 2019 to mark the game’s first anniversary. It keeps the school setting and the chase, but the goal changes: instead of notebooks, you collect items while Baldi and other characters from the school pursue you. The tone is the same mix of deliberately crude visuals, jokes and real tension.
How it runs in your browser
This is an unofficial web port credited to crackers and hosted on wasm.rip. It plays right here on this page in the player above, so there’s nothing to download.
It needs a computer. Open it on a phone and you’ll get a message saying the device isn’t supported, rather than the game. Save support isn’t listed, so each visit starts from the beginning. It’s a single-player game.
Controls and devices
Play on a laptop or desktop with a keyboard and mouse. Phones and tablets aren’t supported, and controller support isn’t listed. A key list isn’t published here, but the Baldi’s Basics games on PC use ordinary first-person movement with the mouse to look around, so most players will feel at home within a few seconds.
Tips
- Keep moving, and use corners and doors to break Baldi’s line of sight.
- Listen for the slap of Baldi’s ruler. It speeds up as he gets faster, so it’s your best clue to how much danger you’re in.
- Learn the school’s layout early. Knowing which hallways connect makes it much easier to escape a chase.
- Headphones help, since sound tells you where Baldi and the other characters are before you can see them.
If you’re new to the series, Birthday Bash is a light, approachable way in, and it shows off the series’ humor as well as its scares.
