About Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress 2 is Valve’s team-based first-person shooter, released in October 2007 and free to play on Steam since 2011. Two teams, RED and BLU, fight over objectives using nine classes, each with a clear job: the Scout is fast and fragile, the Heavy carries a minigun, the Medic keeps teammates alive, the Engineer builds sentry guns, and the Spy sneaks behind enemy lines. Matches tend to reward teamwork and class choice as much as aim.

How it runs in your browser

This version uses Valve’s own Source engine, rebuilt as WebAssembly so a browser can run it. It plays right here on this page in the player above, loaded from tf2.riddy.workers.dev.

On your first visit, roughly 800 MB of data loads before anything happens, so expect a wait of several minutes. After that, choose one of the nine classes and play on five classic maps: 2Fort, Well, Dustbowl, Granary and Gravelpit.

Online matches are supported, but traffic is routed through a relay server, so you may get disconnected. If a match disconnects, try joining again. There are no saves in this port, which matters little in a match-based shooter.

Controls and devices

This port is for computers with a keyboard and mouse. It doesn’t support phones or tablets, and controller support isn’t listed. Key bindings for the port aren’t published here.

Because of the large first download, start it on a reliable connection, and keep the tab open until the files finish loading.

The official version

If the browser port struggles on your machine, remember that the official game is free on Steam and gets you Valve’s own servers, the full map list and saved loadouts. The browser version is best for a quick round on a computer where you can’t install Steam.

For other shooters that run in a browser, see our Counter-Strike and Half-Life pages, or the full multiplayer list.

Is Team Fortress 2 Free, Safe and Official?

Is this the official Team Fortress 2?

No. It’s an unofficial browser port whose author isn’t known, and it isn’t made or endorsed by Valve. The official game is free to play on Steam.

How big is the Team Fortress 2 browser download?

Roughly 800 MB loads on your first visit, so allow several minutes and use a steady connection.

Can I play Team Fortress 2 online in the browser?

Yes. Online matches are supported, though they’re routed via a relay server, so you may get disconnected. It needs a computer; phones aren’t supported.
