About Urban Terror
Urban Terror started around 2000 as a total conversion mod for id Software’s Quake III Arena. FrozenSand later released it as a free standalone game in 2007, running on the open-source ioquake3 engine. The engine code is under the GPL, while the game code is closed and its assets are freeware.
It plays like a cross between a tactical shooter and an arena shooter. Weapons and gear are modeled on real-world equipment, and getting hit makes you bleed until you bandage. Movement, though, keeps much of Quake’s speed, with sprinting, wall jumps and other tricks that experienced players use to cross maps quickly. The full game includes team modes such as Capture the Flag and Bomb as well as free-for-all, and which ones you find in the browser depends on the servers. Those servers include long-running Urban Terror maps such as Abbey, Casa, Turnpike and Uptown.
How it runs in your browser
This web version comes from pieter.com. It compiles the ioUrbanTerror engine to WebAssembly, so it’s the actual game running in a browser tab rather than a remake. It plays right here on this page, with nothing to install.
Matches are online, against other people connected at the same time, so how full a server is depends on who else is playing. There’s no campaign or long-term progress to save.
Controls and devices
Urban Terror is a keyboard-and-mouse shooter, so play on a computer. Phones and controllers aren’t listed as supported. The specific key bindings aren’t listed here; the game’s settings menu lets you check and change them.
Who it’s for
Players who like fast, team-based shooters and want something that runs without an install. Expect a learning curve: regular players know the maps and movement tricks well. If you enjoy the movement, the Quake page covers the series Urban Terror grew out of, and our multiplayer list has more games you can play online.
