About SandStorm

SandStorm is a multiplayer action game made for the browser by the team behind sandstorm.ink. Its main idea is the terrain. The world is built from individual grains of material, and every one of those grains is simulated, so the map isn’t a fixed backdrop. Anything you can see can be changed in the middle of a fight.

That puts it in the line of falling-sand games, a long-running genre of browser toys where sand, water and fire behave as particles and react to each other. SandStorm turns that idea into a shooter. You can tunnel through the ground to reach an opponent, pile up material for cover, set things on fire, flood an area, or blast part of the map away. Because the ground keeps changing, a position that was safe a minute ago may not stay that way.

How it runs in your browser

SandStorm is a native web game, not a port of a PC or console release. It plays right here on this page through the player above, which loads the game from its own site. There’s nothing to download or install.

Online play is built in, so you’re playing against other people. The game doesn’t keep save files, and each session starts fresh. For a match-based shooter, that’s mostly a non-issue, since there’s little to lose when you close the tab.

Controls and devices

SandStorm runs on computers and on phones, so you can play at a desk or pick it up on a handset with touch controls. A specific key list hasn’t been published here, so check the game’s own prompts and menus for the current controls. Controller support isn’t listed.

On a phone, turning the screen sideways gives you more room to see the map and aim, which helps in a game where the terrain matters this much.

Who it’s for

SandStorm suits players who like short online matches and enjoy using the environment as much as their weapons. If you like the idea of reshaping the battlefield instead of memorizing it, this is a good fit. For more games you can play with other people, see our multiplayer list.
