About LEGO Racers

LEGO Racers is a 1999 kart racer developed by High Voltage Software and published by Lego Media, first for Windows and then for the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation. In the story, Rocket Racer, Legoland’s greatest racing champion, gets bored of winning and sets up a contest, using a dimensional warp machine built by his friend Veronica Voltage to bring in the best racers in Legoland’s history.

Circuit Race is the main mode. You face a host and four other racers on each circuit, starting with Captain Redbeard, and the first six circuits cover 12 tracks across Castle, Pirates, Space and Adventurers themes. Later circuits run the same tracks mirrored, and the last is a single race, Rocket Racer Run. Power-up bricks come in four types, Projectile, Hazard, Shield and Turbo, and you can perform a Turbo Start and power slides. Single Race, Time Race against Veronica Voltage’s ghost and the split-screen Versus Race fill out the modes. In Build mode you design cars and minifigures from the bricks you unlock. Reviews were mixed, but the game has a cult following.

How it runs in your browser

Step On It calls itself a fan recreation of LEGO Racers built in a brand new engine, with online multiplayer and restored shortcuts. Its credits say the rebuild draws on the LEGO Racers Decompilation and racers-portable projects, with browser reference work from warp.parts, and it uses SDL, Emscripten and FFmpeg. It needs WebGL 2. Pressing Play opens steponit.online in a new tab, and the site downloads the game data itself, resuming if the download stops.

The credits thank Studframe Animations for research used to rebuild cut shortcuts, and vitawrap for a Test Track with a drift pad and garage. Under Soundtrack in the audio options you can pick JUGEBOX98, Jugebox98’s remasters of the music. You can also add custom track ZIP files, which then appear in Single Race under Circuit 7. The site doesn’t name the people behind it.

On 3 November 2026, in desktop Chrome, it loaded, played a skippable intro and reached the main menu with Build, Circuit Race, Single Race, Versus Race, Time Race and Options. We didn’t try a race or online play.

Controls and devices

The site doesn’t list keyboard keys, so check Options before your first race. On touch screens you hold to accelerate, drag left or right to steer and let go to coast, with buttons for power slides and power-ups. You can swap the controls to the other side. On iPhone, the site explains adding it to the home screen from Safari and says iOS 26.1 or later fixes a controller Back button problem. We haven’t tested a phone.

Who it’s for

It’s for anyone who grew up building cars in LEGO Racers. For more LEGO in a browser, see LEGO Island, or try another kart racer in Mario Kart 64.
