About Mario Kart 64

Nintendo EAD developed Mario Kart 64, and Nintendo released it for the Nintendo 64 in Japan in December 1996, in North America in February 1997 and in Europe that June. Eight drivers in three weight classes race on 16 courses split into four cups, at 50cc, 100cc or 150cc, and clearing every cup at 150cc unlocks a mirror mode.

Item boxes hand out boosts and weapons, and this is the game that introduced the blue shell, which hunts down whoever is in first place. Drifting through corners and tucking in behind another kart both give you extra speed. Besides Grand Prix and Time Trials, up to four players can share one console in Versus races or in Battle, where each kart carries balloons that pop when it’s hit. It sold about 9.87 million copies, making it the second-best-selling game on the console.

How it runs in your browser

This is MarioKart64JS, a fan project by AgentiLoop. It isn’t an emulator. AI agents, supervised by the AgentiLoop team, ported the code of n64decomp/mk64 (a community project that reconstructed the game’s source code) to JavaScript, and the game now draws with Three.js and WebGL. The graphics and sound were extracted from the USA version of the game, and the original music sequences play through the port’s own sound player. The developers call it a research project testing how far AI tools can go at recreating a game.

Pressing Play opens mk64js.gokart.games/play in a new tab, and the game starts with nothing to install. G cycles the resolution from the N64’s 240p up to 480p, 960p and native, along with HD textures from the MK64 Reloaded pack. Pressing 3 swaps in Wii-style 3D karts, and J changes the jump mode.

For online play, choose 2P, 3P or 4P GAME. A room starts when it fills or 15 seconds after the first player joins, and CPU karts take the empty seats; press Enter to race the CPU instead. Grand Prix, VS and Battle all work online, and the project’s desktop apps for macOS, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi join the same lobby. We haven’t tested how well online races hold up.

Controls and devices

On a keyboard, the up arrow or W accelerates, the down arrow or S brakes, and left and right (or A and D) steer. Space drifts, and releasing it gives a mini-turbo. Shift or E uses an item, while Q does the same but throws a banana forward. M opens the course menu, N turns the music on or off, and Delete restarts. On a gamepad, A is gas, B is brake, LB or RB drifts, X uses an item and Start restarts. Touch controls aren’t mentioned, so plan on a computer.

Who it’s for

It suits anyone who grew up with the N64 game and wants a quick Grand Prix or a four-player online race without an emulator or a cartridge. If you want Nintendo’s own release, the original is part of the Nintendo 64 library on Nintendo Switch Online.

Is Mario Kart 64 Free, Safe and Official?

Is this Mario Kart 64 running in an emulator?

No. AI agents ported the code of the decompiled game to JavaScript, and it draws with Three.js and WebGL. The graphics and sound were extracted from the USA version of the game. The play page starts the game directly and doesn’t ask you for a file.

Yes. Choose 2P, 3P or 4P GAME. A room starts when it fills up or 15 seconds after the first player joins, and CPU karts take any empty seats. Grand Prix, VS and Battle all work online. We haven’t tested how well online races run.

Is this the official Mario Kart 64?

No. It’s an unofficial fan project by AgentiLoop and isn’t affiliated with Nintendo. Nintendo has re-released the original game through Nintendo Switch Online.
