About Worms Armageddon

Worms Armageddon is a turn-based strategy game from Team17 and part of its Worms series. It came out for Windows in Europe on January 29, 1999, with Team17 publishing it there, and reached North America in June 1999 through Hasbro Interactive. Martyn Brown produced it, and Bjørn Lynne composed the music.

You command a team of up to eight earthworms and try to wipe out an opposing team with a wide range of weapons. Matches take place on a two-dimensional landscape that you can blow apart and customize, and the game is known for its cartoon look and its particular sense of humor. DOS.Zone’s own description sums it up as worms battling on destructible maps with a variety of weapons and tactics.

The game was later ported to the PlayStation and Dreamcast, both published by Hasbro Interactive in December 1999. Infogrames Lyon House made versions for the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color, which Infogrames published between late 1999 and 2000. In September 2024 it was released again on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

How it runs in your browser

This is the original Windows game rather than a DOS one. DOS.Zone runs it inside a PC emulated by js-dos, an open-source DOSBox build that works in the browser, and the files load from the site. Pressing Play opens dos.zone in a new tab, and from there the game starts without an install, an account or a copy of your own. DOS.Zone doesn’t show ads.

DOS.Zone files it with its Windows 95 games under strategy and action, and the listing has a 4.4 rating from 128 player reviews. There’s no online play, but local multiplayer is supported, and because every turn is taken one at a time, players can share the same computer. The page doesn’t say whether teams, settings or progress are saved between visits.

Controls and devices

Worms Armageddon is listed for keyboard and mouse. DOS.Zone doesn’t publish the controls for it, so check the in-game options before your first match. Phones get virtual on-screen controls on DOS.Zone, but the game suits a desktop or laptop much better.

Who it’s for

It’s a good fit for anyone who wants a turn-based game to share with friends at one computer, and for players who spent the late 1990s lobbing weapons across these landscapes and want a match again. Team17’s later Worms: Open Warfare 2, the 2007 PSP game, also runs in a browser if you want a newer entry. For another 1990s party game, Dyna Blaster, the European release of Bomberman, is on DOS.Zone too.
