About Road Rash
This Road Rash is the 1994 game, not the 1991 original on the Sega Genesis. Electronic Arts released it first for the 3DO in July 1994, and it is the third game in the Road Rash series. Monkey Do Productions developed the 3DO version. A Sega CD version made at the same time came out in March 1995, meant as a bridge between the 3DO game and Road Rash 3 on the Genesis. Buzz Puppet Productions then handled the 1996 versions for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Windows, with Papyrus Design Group involved in the PC release, which reached North America in September 1996. That Windows version is the one DOS.Zone hosts.
The game is built around a series of motorcycle races through California. You have to win to unlock harder races, and along the way you fight the other riders, with your fists or with weapons, to knock them out of contention. DOS.Zone’s description mentions chains, bats and kicks on highways full of traffic. Randy Breen designed and produced the game with Lori Washbon as co-designer, Keith McCurdy directed it, and Don Veca composed the score. The soundtrack is also remembered for its grunge rock, including Soundgarden. The Windows version became very popular on PCs in India and across South Asia.
How it runs in your browser
Road Rash is a Windows 95 game rather than a DOS one, but DOS.Zone handles it with the same tool: js-dos, its open-source DOSBox build for the browser, emulates a complete PC, and the original 1996 release runs inside it. Press Play and the game’s DOS.Zone page opens in a new tab. The files load from the site, so you don’t install anything or bring your own copy, and you don’t sign in. DOS.Zone carries no ads.
Keep in mind that listings there aren’t permanent. DOS.Zone has removed games when rights holders asked, as it did with GTA 1 and 2 after a request from Take-Two, so this page could lose its link the same way.
The original included multiplayer, but this listing has no online races.
A second option is roadrash.fun, a fan remake by olucurious rather than the original game. It’s rebuilt with Three.js from the PC version’s sprites and tracks, and adds a career mode, a garage, a leaderboard and invite rooms for up to eight riders, plus touch controls with tilt steering on phones. It loaded to its title menu in our check on 3 November 2026. It isn’t made or endorsed by Electronic Arts either.
Controls and devices
Use a keyboard. DOS.Zone files the game under racing and beat ’em up, but it doesn’t list the key bindings, so check the game’s own control settings or the DOS.Zone page before you ride. Phones get virtual on-screen controls on DOS.Zone, though a keyboard on a desktop or laptop suits the game better.
Who it’s for
Road Rash is for anyone who wants racing with a fight in it, and especially for players who grew up with the PC version and want to hear that soundtrack again. If you’d rather keep both hands on the wheel, EA’s other 1994 racer, The Need for Speed, also runs on DOS.Zone.
Is Road Rash Free, Safe and Official?
Can I play the old Road Rash PC game online for free?
Yes. DOS.Zone runs the 1996 Windows version in your browser for free, with no account and nothing to install. There’s no online multiplayer on DOS.Zone, so you race against the computer there. The fan remake on roadrash.fun, listed as a second option, has invite rooms for up to eight riders.
Is this the Sega Genesis Road Rash?
No. It’s the 1994 Road Rash, first released on the 3DO, in its 1996 Windows version. The 1991 Genesis game is an earlier entry in the series.
Does Road Rash work on a phone?
DOS.Zone has virtual on-screen controls for phones, but Road Rash was built for a keyboard, so a computer is the better fit.
