About Gran Turismo 4

Polyphony Digital developed Gran Turismo 4 for the PlayStation 2 under director and producer Kazunori Yamauchi, and Sony Computer Entertainment published it. It came out in Japan on December 28, 2004, in North America on February 22, 2005, and in Europe in March 2005. The browser version here uses the North American release, so the menus and text are in English.

The game is a driving simulator with more than 700 cars from about 80 manufacturers and 51 tracks, many of them new or reworked from earlier entries. The main mode is built around buying and tuning cars and entering race series. In A-Spec you drive yourself and earn points for your results, while B-Spec turns you into a crew chief who directs an AI driver. The Driving School has license tests that open up more events, Driving Missions set short challenges in a similar style, and Photo Mode lets you set up shots of your cars with an adjustable camera.

Online racing was promised during development but cut before release. A shorter release called Gran Turismo 4 Prologue came out in 2003 and 2004 as a preview with about 50 cars; it’s a separate game, not this one.

How it runs in your browser

Slayoner hosts the PS2 release on granturismo4.online, using snuri00’s browser runtime, which is built on WebAssembly and WebGPU. Pressing Play opens the site in a new tab. The host loads the game files itself, so there’s nothing to install and no game file of your own to import. Use a current Chrome or Edge. Saving isn’t listed among the host’s features, so a long A-Spec career may not carry over between visits.

The host also documents two-player racing through a private browser room. Both players use the game’s split-screen 2 Player Battle, and their controls are kept in sync between the two browsers. It works by sharing that split-screen mode, not through an online lobby in the original game.

Controls and devices

You can drive with a keyboard or a game controller. Gran Turismo rewards smooth throttle and steering, so a controller with analog sticks and triggers is far easier to drive with than keys. Click inside the game picture first so it receives your input. Phones aren’t listed as supported.

Who it’s for

It suits car fans who want to work through the license tests and the car list of a PS2 classic again, and anyone who wants a head-to-head race with a friend from a browser. For more games to play with others, see our multiplayer list.

Is Gran Turismo 4 Free, Safe and Official?

Can I race Gran Turismo 4 against a friend online?

Yes, through the host’s private rooms. You play the game’s split-screen 2 Player Battle, with the controls kept in sync between two browsers. It isn’t an online lobby built into the original game.

Which region’s version is this?

The North American (NTSC-U) release, so the menus and in-game text are in English.

Is this the official game?

No. It’s a fan project by Slayoner running the PS2 version, and it isn’t made or endorsed by Sony or Polyphony Digital.
