About Virtua Tennis 2
Virtua Tennis 2 was made by Hitmaker, the Sega studio also known as AM3, and published by Sega. It started in arcades on Sega’s NAOMI hardware in 2001 and reached the Dreamcast later that year. The PlayStation 2 version, the one hosted here, followed in 2002: in North America in July under the name Sega Sports Tennis, then in Japan and Europe in November, with Acclaim publishing the European release.
The sequel’s biggest addition was women’s tennis. Venus and Serena Williams, Monica Seles and Lindsay Davenport joined a men’s lineup that includes Patrick Rafter, Carlos Moyá, Magnus Norman and Thomas Enqvist, and mixed doubles became possible. Players also gained the slice shot.
There are three main ways to play. Exhibition sets up a single match with your own settings. Tournament asks you to win five matches on different surfaces and venues. World Tour runs over calendar seasons in which you manage a male and a female player at once, starting at rank 300 and improving them through training exercises; finishing an exercise on its hardest level unlocks an outfit.
How it runs in your browser
The browser version is a fan project by Slayoner, built on snuri00’s runtime, which runs the PS2 game with WebAssembly and WebGPU. Pressing Play opens virtuatennis2.online in a new tab. Nothing needs to be installed, and the host loads the game files automatically, so you don’t need a disc image.
A current Chrome or Edge on a computer is the safe choice. Saving isn’t listed as a feature, so a World Tour career may not carry over between visits.
The host offers private rooms with chat. Its English game guide says this title’s two-player mode hasn’t been tested online, so treat online matches as experimental rather than a guaranteed way to play a friend.
Controls and devices
You can use a keyboard or a game controller. Click inside the game after it loads so it receives your input. A keyboard works, though a controller is closer to the PS2 pad the game was designed for. Phones aren’t listed as supported, so play on a desktop or laptop.
Who it’s for
It suits players who remember Virtua Tennis 2 or Sega Sports Tennis from the Dreamcast and PS2 era and want a quick match in a browser tab, and anyone who prefers arcade tennis to a detailed simulation. Exhibition is the fastest way in, while World Tour suits longer sessions. The rosters are from the early 2000s, so don’t expect current players.
Is Virtua Tennis 2 Free, Safe and Official?
Can I play Virtua Tennis 2 online against a friend?
The host has private rooms with chat, but its own guide says this game’s two-player mode hasn’t been tested online. Treat online matches as experimental.
Is Sega Sports Tennis the same game?
Yes. The PS2 version was sold in North America as Sega Sports Tennis, and the Dreamcast version there was called Tennis 2K2. In Japan it was Power Smash 2.
Is this an official Sega release?
No. It’s a fan project by Slayoner that runs the PS2 version, and it isn’t made or endorsed by Sega.
