About WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW

Yuke’s developed WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW, and THQ released it for the PlayStation 2 in North America on November 2, 2004, with Europe following later that month and Japan in February 2005. It came after Here Comes the Pain and started the SmackDown vs. Raw name that the series kept for the rest of the decade. This page covers that original 2004 game, not the numbered sequels.

Several of its changes are aimed at the moments before and during a match. Singles bouts can open with a randomly chosen mini-game, such as a test of strength, a stare down or a shoving match, and some match types have mini-games partway through, such as a chop battle. A clean and dirty system lets you set a wrestler as clean, dirty or neutral, each with its own meter. Arenas are based on WWE’s 2003 and 2004 pay-per-views and weekly shows.

Outside the ring, the game reworked its pay-per-view mode and added a Create-a-Championship option, stable creation and a Challenge mode alongside a more detailed Create-a-Wrestler. It was also the first game in the series with online play, though only for a couple of match types.

How it runs in your browser

Slayoner hosts the PS2 release on smackdownvsraw.online, using snuri00’s browser runtime, which is built on WebAssembly and WebGPU. Pressing Play opens that site in a new tab. The host loads the game files on its own, so there’s nothing to install and you don’t need a copy of the game. Use a current Chrome or Edge, since WebGPU support in other browsers is less reliable. Saving isn’t listed among the host’s features, so plan on starting from the menus each visit.

The site has private rooms with chat. Its English game guide says that this game’s two-player mode hasn’t been tested online, so treat online matches as experimental rather than a feature you can count on for every mode.

Controls and devices

Keyboard and controller both work. Click inside the game picture after it loads so your input reaches it. A controller is the closer match to the PS2 pad the game was designed around. Phones aren’t listed as supported, so use a desktop or laptop.

Who it’s for

It’s for wrestling fans who played the first SmackDown! vs. RAW on the PS2 and want to revisit its roster and modes without a console. Matches against the computer are the dependable part, since they don’t rely on the experimental online rooms. For more games you can play with other people, see our multiplayer list.
