About Pokémon Red and Blue

Pokémon Red and Blue are the role-playing games that started the Pokémon series. Game Freak developed them and Nintendo published them for the Game Boy. They first came out in Japan in 1996 as Pocket Monsters Red and Green, followed by a special Blue edition later that year, and reached North America in September 1998 and Europe in October 1999 as Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. Satoshi Tajiri directed them, and Junichi Masuda wrote the music.

You leave Pallet Town with a first partner from Professor Oak, catch and train Pokémon, defeat the eight Gym Leaders and take on the Elite Four. Each version has its own exclusive Pokémon, and some evolve only when traded, so completing all 151 Pokédex entries meant trading with another player over a Game Link Cable.

How it runs in your browser

Pressing Play opens redblueonline.com in a new tab. The site calls itself Red & Blue Online and doesn’t name who runs it. You need a free account to play: the Play button leads to a sign-in page, and creating an account asks for an email address, a username and a password of at least 12 characters. The site says saves are kept with your account so you can continue on any device, and that an internet connection is required.

It isn’t a plain copy of the Game Boy cartridge. The screens keep the original look, but the guides describe a reworked game: classic battle glitches fixed, such as the one-in-256 miss and Focus Energy lowering critical hits, a Bag with separate pockets, a bank, registered key items and outfits from city marts. Online, you can add friends with a Pal Pad, trade or battle nearby Trainers, give items or money, chat, and watch a friend’s game. A Trade Station and a PokéMarket let you exchange or sell Pokémon even when the other player is offline. The site doesn’t say what the game runs on.

On 3 November 2026, in desktop Chrome, the home page loaded with a count of 3,401 players who had joined and 19 online, and the Play button led to the sign-in page. We didn’t create an account, so we didn’t see the game itself.

Controls and devices

The guides describe the Game Boy buttons, A, B, Start and Select, and note that the keyboard default for Select is Right Shift. Press R to run and C to write a nearby message. You can click other Trainers in the world, and drag Pokémon with the mouse in Bill’s PC.

The home page shows the game on iPhones, and the guides mention touch: on a phone you open Menu first, and in the PC you hold before dragging. We haven’t tested it on a phone, and the site doesn’t mention controllers.

Who it’s for

It suits players who want to replay Kanto and trade or battle other people while they do it. If you’d rather play the classic games on their own without an account, our Pokémon games page gathers 18 of them, from Red and Blue onward.

Can I play Pokémon Red and Blue online with friends?

On Red & Blue Online, yes. Its guides describe trading directly with nearby Trainers or friends, battling them in Normal or Balanced format, sending gifts, chatting and watching a friend’s game. It’s an unofficial fan site, not a Nintendo service.
