About Mortal Kombat 9

NetherRealm Studios released Mortal Kombat in April 2011 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Fans call it Mortal Kombat 9 because it’s the ninth main game, and it doubled as a reboot: after the events of Armageddon, Raiden sends warnings back to his younger self, and the story retells the first three tournaments with a different outcome.

It brought the series back to a flat, side-on 2D fighting plane, added X-Ray moves that show bones breaking in close-up, and filled the game with modes: a long cinematic story, a Challenge Tower of 300 missions, two-on-two tag battles and, of course, Fatalities. The PS Vita version followed in May 2012 with every fighter from the downloadable packs (Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain and Freddy Krueger), extra skins and the PlayStation-only guest Kratos. A PC release, the Komplete Edition, came in 2013.

How it runs in your browser

This browser version is the PS Vita release, made by Lauta, the same fan developer behind our Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Tekken listings. His site calls it “Mortal Kombardo 9”. Pressing Play opens mk9.lauta.site in a new tab, and nothing needs installing.

The game isn’t one big download. It fetches its data in pieces as you play, so the first fight starts after a short wait and later stages load as you reach them. A steady connection helps.

The page has graphics settings (resolution scaling and a 30 or 60 FPS cap) and several languages, including English and Spanish.

Online play

Online matches are built into the page. The Play online panel lets you find a match, create a room and copy a link for a friend, and a global chat sits next to the game, busy with players looking for opponents. When we checked, more than 350 people were in that chat, most of them writing in Spanish. Players there recommend low graphics settings if an online match lags.

Controls and devices

Keyboard and controller both work, and a controller is the closer match to how the game was designed. The site has a controls panel where you can see or change the layout. It’s built for computers; phones aren’t listed.

Tips

The Challenge Tower and the story mode are good ways to learn several characters, since each chapter puts you in control of a different fighter. If you only want to play against friends, create a room and send the link instead of waiting in the chat.
