About Mortal Kombat 4
Mortal Kombat 4 is a fighting game that Midway developed and published for arcades, released in North America on September 11, 1997. It is the fourth main game in the series and the sequel to 1995’s Mortal Kombat 3. Ed Boon and John Tobias designed it, and Dan Forden composed the music. It marks two turning points: it was the first Mortal Kombat to use 3D computer graphics, and the last in the series to get an arcade release.
DOS.Zone’s description covers the story and the style. The fighters face the fallen Elder God Shinnok, the combat keeps a 2D feel, weapon attacks join the usual moves, and the polygon characters use textures taken from digitized actors.
Home versions followed in 1998. Eurocom developed the PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and Windows ports, and Digital Eclipse made the Game Boy Color version. The Windows release reached North America on June 30, 1998 and Europe on September 15. An updated edition, Mortal Kombat Gold, came to the Dreamcast in 1999. Warner Bros. Games owns the series now.
How it runs in your browser
The earlier games in the series on DOS.Zone are MS-DOS releases, but this listing is the Windows version. Press Play and its DOS.Zone page opens in a new tab. There, js-dos, the open-source browser version of DOSBox that DOS.Zone develops, emulates a PC and runs the original Windows program inside it; the site files it under Windows 95 games. DOS.Zone supplies the game files, so you install nothing and don’t need to own a copy, and you can start without making an account. You won’t see ads on the site. Players have given the listing an average of five stars across 105 reviews.
Online play isn’t part of this listing, and DOS.Zone doesn’t say whether two people can fight on one keyboard.
Controls and devices
For this game, DOS.Zone publishes the key layout. Up, Down, Left and Right move your fighter. A is high punch and S is high kick, Z is low punch and X is low kick, and C blocks. Shift makes you run and Space starts the game. If that layout doesn’t suit you, press F2 to remap the controls.
Phones get DOS.Zone’s virtual on-screen controls, but the game expects a keyboard, so use a desktop or laptop where you can. Chromebooks haven’t been checked.
Who it’s for
Mortal Kombat 4 is for players curious about the point where the series first moved to 3D graphics, and for anyone who played the PC release in the late 1990s and wants a quick match without hunting down the old disc. To compare it with what came before, Mortal Kombat from 1992, Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat Trilogy all run on DOS.Zone in their MS-DOS versions.
Is Mortal Kombat 4 Free, Safe and Official?
Can I play Mortal Kombat 4 in my browser for free?
