About Mortal Kombat 3

Mortal Kombat 3 is a fighting game that Midway developed and published for arcades, where it arrived in North America on April 15, 1995. It is the third main game in the Mortal Kombat series and the sequel to 1993’s Mortal Kombat II. Ed Boon and John Tobias designed it, and Dan Forden composed the music.

As in the earlier games, you pick a fighter from the cast and guide them through a string of battles against other opponents. This time the tournament storyline is gone. Shao Kahn returns, resurrects his bride Sindel and launches an invasion of Earthrealm, and the playable warriors fight back against him.

Home versions came out together in North America on October 13, 1995, for the Sega Genesis, Super NES, Game Boy, PlayStation and MS-DOS. Sculptured Software developed the Genesis, Super NES and MS-DOS versions, and GT Interactive published the MS-DOS and Windows releases. Versions for the Game Gear, Master System and R-Zone also appeared, and a Windows version arrived in 1996. Warner Bros. Games owns the series today.

How it runs in your browser

Pressing Play opens the game’s DOS.Zone listing, titled Mortal Kombat III, in a new tab. js-dos, DOS.Zone’s open-source port of DOSBox for the web, boots the MS-DOS release in an emulated PC inside that tab. The site provides every file the game needs, so you don’t download an installer or bring a copy of your own, and no account is involved. DOS.Zone doesn’t show ads either. The listing sits under fighting and action and has a 4.6 rating from 22 player reviews.

There are no online matches here. The page doesn’t mention whether two people can fight on one keyboard, or whether your settings survive between sessions.

Controls and devices

You fight with the keyboard. DOS.Zone doesn’t list the controls for this release, so open the game’s options before you choose a fighter and see which keys handle each attack. Click inside the game window after it loads so the emulator receives your keys.

Phones get virtual on-screen controls from DOS.Zone, but a fighting game built around a keyboard is easier to handle on a computer. Chromebooks haven’t been checked.

Who it’s for

Mortal Kombat 3 is for players who had the PC version in the 1990s and want a few rounds again, and for series fans who want to see the entry that swapped the tournament for Shao Kahn’s invasion of Earthrealm. Mortal Kombat Trilogy built on it in 1996, bringing back fighters and stages from the first two games, and its MS-DOS version runs on DOS.Zone too, so you can play the two back to back and compare the rosters.
