About Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein 3D is a 1992 first-person shooter developed by id Software and published for MS-DOS by Apogee Software and FormGen. It drew its inspiration from Castle Wolfenstein, a 1981 game by Muse Software, and it is the third game in the Wolfenstein series. John Romero and Tom Hall designed it, Tom Hall directed it, and Robert Prince composed the music for the MS-DOS version.

The setting is World War II. You are William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, an Allied spy who breaks out of the Nazi prison Castle Wolfenstein and then carries out a string of crucial missions against the Nazis. Each level ends either at an elevator to the next one or with a final boss to kill. On the way you face Nazi soldiers, dogs and other enemies, armed with a knife and a range of guns. It’s a single-player game, and versions also appeared on the Super NES, the Mac and the Game Boy Advance.

How it runs in your browser

The Play button takes you to DOS.Zone in a new tab. There, js-dos, DOS.Zone’s open-source DOSBox build for the browser, emulates a DOS PC and starts the original MS-DOS release. The site supplies the game files itself, so you don’t install anything, don’t need a copy of your own and don’t make an account. DOS.Zone carries no ads, and its own description says the game is free to play without registration. Players there rate it 5 out of 5 from 815 reviews.

There’s no multiplayer room for this one, which matches the original: Wolfenstein 3D was built for one player. The host’s notes don’t mention saving, so don’t count on your progress being kept once you close the tab.

Controls and devices

Plan on a keyboard and mouse. The exact key layout isn’t listed here, so look at DOS.Zone’s page before you start. DOS.Zone’s description says its virtual on-screen controls let you play on a phone as well, which may do for a quick try, but a game designed for a keyboard is easier to handle on a computer. Chromebooks aren’t confirmed.

Who it’s for

It suits players who want to see the game id Software made before Doom, and anyone who likes a shooter with plain goals: get past the guards, find the elevator, beat the boss. Fans of the later Wolfenstein games can see how B.J. Blazkowicz’s story was told in 1992. Once you’ve escaped the castle, Doom shows the step id Software took the following year, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein takes the series into online team play with Axis and Allies. Because nothing needs installing, it’s also an easy way to show someone what an early first-person shooter looked like.

Is Wolfenstein 3D Free, Safe and Official?

Can I play Wolfenstein 3D online for free?

You can play it free in a browser tab on DOS.Zone, without registering. It’s a single-player game, though, and DOS.Zone has no multiplayer room for it.

Do I need to download Wolfenstein 3D?

No. DOS.Zone loads the game files from its own site and runs them through js-dos, so there’s nothing to install and no copy of your own to supply.

Can I play Wolfenstein 3D on my phone?

DOS.Zone says you can, using its virtual on-screen controls. The game was designed for a keyboard, though, so a computer is the better fit.
