About Out of This World

Out of This World is the North American name of Another World, a cinematic platform action-adventure designed by Éric Chahi. Delphine Software published it in November 1991, first for the Amiga and the Atari ST, and Interplay Productions released it in North America under the new title. Jean-François Freitas composed the music.

You play Lester, a young scientist. An experiment goes wrong and leaves him on a dangerous alien world, where he has to fight to survive. Wikipedia files the game under action and platform.

Versions for the Apple IIGS, MS-DOS and Super NES followed in 1992, and the Genesis version came out in March 1993 in North America and in May 1993 in Europe. A 3DO version arrived in 1994. The game has been re-released many times since, including a 15th Anniversary edition for Windows in 2006 and a 20th Anniversary edition for Windows and OS X on April 4, 2013. It has also reached phones, the Atari Jaguar, the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, the PlayStation consoles, the Xbox One and the Switch. Éric Chahi holds the rights today.

How it runs in your browser

The DOS.Zone listing is the MS-DOS release under its North American title, and the page’s address ends in 1992, the year the MS-DOS version came out. Clicking Play opens that page in a new tab. The game then runs inside js-dos, the open-source DOSBox port DOS.Zone maintains for the browser, which emulates the kind of PC the MS-DOS version was written for.

The game files come from the site, so there’s no download, no copy of your own to provide and no account to set up. DOS.Zone doesn’t show ads. Its page rates the game 5 out of 5 from 41 player reviews, and the description on the listing says it can be played free without registration.

DOS.Zone’s notes don’t say whether you can save in the browser, so check the listing if you want to stop partway and come back later.

Controls and devices

Out of This World was built for a keyboard. DOS.Zone doesn’t publish its key layout, so take a moment in the opening scenes to work out the keys before things get dangerous for Lester.

DOS.Zone shows virtual on-screen controls on phones, and the listing says you can play this game on mobile that way. A keyboard on a desktop or laptop is still the better fit. Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed.

Who it’s for

It suits players who know the game under either name and want to replay the MS-DOS version without setting up an emulator, and anyone curious about cinematic platformers of the early 1990s. If you like this style, Broderbund’s Prince of Persia and its 1993 sequel, Prince of Persia 2, are also cinematic platform games that run in a browser.
