About Unreal
Unreal is a first-person shooter developed by Epic MegaGames and Digital Extremes and published by GT Interactive for Windows in May 1998, with a Mac OS version that September. James Schmalz and Cliff Bleszinski designed it, and it was the first game built on the Unreal Engine. It sold 1.5 million copies by 2002, and critics praised its graphics, music, atmosphere and multiplayer bots. In 2024 it officially became freeware with Epic Games’ blessing.
You play Prisoner 849, whose prison ship crash-lands on the planet Na Pali. Its people, the four-armed Nali, live under the rule of the Skaarj, a reptilian empire mining the planet for Tarydium crystals. The prisoner fights through mines, temples and a castle before reaching the Skaarj mothership and its queen. The game led to Unreal Tournament, which has its own page.
How it runs in your browser
Unreal Engine Web Ports is a non-commercial fan project that compiles classic Unreal-engine games to WebAssembly. It says it isn’t affiliated with Epic Games or with the OldUnreal team. Pressing Play opens its Unreal build on unrealcollection.games in a new tab.
This build is Unreal v200, the original 1998 retail release, as it shipped before later patches. The site serves the game data itself: the first launch downloads it into your browser’s storage, and later launches start from that cache. A launcher page lets you start at the menu, pick a map, load a save, upload a mod as a .zip and change engine settings. The site warns that very few maps and mods work with v200.
The listed modes are the campaign, Cooperative, DeathMatch, Team Play, Dark Match and King of the Hill. Online play is peer to peer over WebRTC: tick Host a game and share the invite link, or use a private room code so only friends can join. The site collects anonymous usage data, such as which maps you load, without an account or a cookie.
On 3 November 2026, in desktop Chrome, it loaded to the opening flyby over the castle with the prompt “Press ESC to begin”. About 60 MB had downloaded by then. We didn’t play past that point.
Controls and devices
The site asks for a desktop browser with a keyboard and mouse, and names a recent Chrome, Edge or Firefox with WebGL. Esc opens the game’s menu. If the mouse doesn’t lock while you play, press Esc, go back into the game and left-click. The full key layout isn’t listed, so check the game’s own settings. Phones aren’t mentioned, and we haven’t tested one.
Who it’s for
It suits players who remember Na Pali and want to replay the campaign without installing anything, and anyone curious about the game that launched the Unreal Engine. Co-op lets a friend join the story. For another shooter from the 1990s, try Quake, and for the series’ later arena games, Unreal Tournament 2004.
Is Unreal Free, Safe and Official?
Can I play Unreal online for free?
Yes. The fan site unrealcollection.games runs the 1998 game free in a browser tab with no account. You can host a game and send a friend an invite link, or join through the game’s own server browser. It isn’t made or endorsed by Epic Games.
Is this the full Unreal campaign?
The site lists the single-player campaign along with Cooperative, DeathMatch, Team Play, Dark Match and King of the Hill. We loaded it to the opening flyby but didn’t play a level.
Do I need my own copy of Unreal?
No. The site downloads the game data itself on the first launch and keeps it in your browser’s storage, so later launches start faster.
