Epic MegaGames and Digital Extremes released Unreal in May 1998. It was a single-player shooter set on the alien planet Na Pali, and the first game built on the Unreal Engine, which Epic went on to license to many other studios. Its multiplayer led straight to Unreal Tournament in 1999, an arena shooter built around bots, Capture the Flag, Domination and Assault.
Unreal Tournament 2003 moved to a new engine, and Unreal Tournament 2004 expanded it the next year with Onslaught, a vehicle mode. On the Xbox, Epic made Unreal Championship in 2002 and Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict in 2005, which added melee weapons and third-person fighting. Epic shut down the online servers for several of the older games in 2023, and fan groups have kept them alive since.
All of them open in a new tab, with nothing to install and no account.
Unreal Tournament is the easiest way in: its download is far smaller than UT2004’s, and bots are ready to play against. Pick UT2004 if you want vehicles and Onslaught, but clear some disk space first. Unreal suits players who want a story to play through, alone or in co-op, and Unreal Championship 2 is the one to try with a controller. For more arena shooting, see Quake III Arena.
No. They are unofficial fan ports, run by the Unreal Engine Web Ports project and, for Unreal Tournament, also by DOS.Zone. None is made or endorsed by Epic Games, and they could be taken down at Epic’s request.
Yes. The ports let you host a match and send a friend an invite link, and UT2004 adds an experimental way to join internet servers. We haven’t tested how well online matches run.
No. The hosts serve the game data, which downloads into your browser’s storage on the first launch. UT2004 is the largest: its host says to allow up to about 8 GB.
