About Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is a point-and-click adventure that Jane Jensen created and Sierra On-Line developed and published. It came out for MS-DOS, Macintosh and Windows on December 17, 1993. Jensen designed the game and directed it with Bill Crow. Robert Holmes produced it with John E. Grayson and also composed the music. It runs on Sierra’s SCI2 engine, it is a single-player game, and it opened the Gabriel Knight series.

The title character is a struggling novelist in New Orleans. He decides to use a spate of recent murders around the city as material for his next book, and that research draws him into a world of voodoo magic and towards the truth about his family’s past as supernatural fighters. DOS.Zone’s description adds that Gabriel runs a bookstore, and that working out the case means solving puzzles and interviewing the people involved.

The CD-ROM version featured a voice cast that included Tim Curry, Leah Remini and Mark Hamill. Activision, now part of Microsoft, holds the rights to the game.

How it runs in your browser

Pressing Play opens the game’s listing on dos.zone in a new tab. js-dos, the open-source DOSBox port that powers DOS.Zone, emulates an MS-DOS PC there and loads the original release onto it. The site provides every file, so you don’t run an installer, look for old discs or register for anything. DOS.Zone has no ads.

The listing tags the game as a quest and adventure for MS-DOS and the IBM PC, with a rating of 5 from 6 player reviews. It doesn’t say whether this is the floppy release or the CD-ROM one with the full voice cast, and it doesn’t describe how saves work. Check DOS.Zone’s page if you want to know whether a long investigation will still be there on your next visit.

Controls and devices

Gabriel Knight is a point-and-click game for a keyboard and mouse. DOS.Zone doesn’t publish a list of controls, so get to know the interface from the game’s own menus as the story opens. Click inside the emulator window after it loads, or it won’t pick up your input.

DOS.Zone offers virtual on-screen controls on phones, but this game was made for a mouse and keyboard, and a desktop or laptop is the comfortable way to play. We haven’t tested it on a phone, and Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed.

Who it’s for

It suits players who like a mystery with a strong story, a real-world setting and a supernatural edge, and who don’t mind taking their time over conversations and clues. It also suits anyone who has heard of the Gabriel Knight series and wants to start with the first game.

Sierra fans can go further back with Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, the 1987 adult comedy adventure, or Space Quest, the 1986 science fiction adventure. Both run on DOS.Zone in the same way.
