About Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards is a graphic adventure that Sierra On-Line developed and published in June 1987. Wikipedia describes it as a game for adults only. It’s an adult comedy, and it isn’t meant for children. Al Lowe designed it with Mark Crowe and Chuck Benton, and Lowe also wrote the music. It is a single-player game, and it started the Leisure Suit Larry series.
Sierra first made it for MS-DOS and the Apple II on its Adventure Game Interpreter, or AGI, the same engine behind Space Quest, which Crowe co-created. Ports followed for the Amiga, the Atari ST, the Apple IIGS, the Mac and the Tandy Color Computer 3.
In July 1991 Sierra released a remake called Leisure Suit Larry 1: In the Land of the Lounge Lizards, for MS-DOS, the Mac and the Amiga. It moved to Sierra’s Creative Interpreter (SCI), with 256-color graphics and a point-and-click, icon-driven interface.
How it runs in your browser
Play sends you to DOS.Zone in a new tab. The original MS-DOS release starts there inside js-dos, the site’s open-source DOSBox build for the web, which emulates the kind of PC the game was written for. DOS.Zone serves the game files itself, so nothing gets installed and you don’t need disks or files of your own. There’s no account to make, and DOS.Zone carries no ads.
The main listing has a rating of 4 from 10 player reviews. DOS.Zone also keeps a separate page for the 1991 VGA remake, rated 5 from 3 reviews, and this page links to it as a second option if you’d rather play the point-and-click version. How your progress is saved between visits isn’t covered here, so look at DOS.Zone’s page before a long session.
Controls and devices
The 1987 version was built for the keyboard, so plan on playing with one. DOS.Zone doesn’t publish a control guide for it, so follow the game’s own prompts once it starts. Click inside the emulator window first so it receives your keystrokes.
On phones, DOS.Zone adds virtual on-screen controls. A game built around the keyboard is much easier on a desktop or laptop, though. We haven’t tested it on a phone, and Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed.
Who it’s for
It suits adults who are curious about Sierra On-Line’s 1980s catalog or about Al Lowe’s brand of comedy, and players who want to see the first Larry game as it first shipped. Because both the 1987 original and the 1991 remake are on DOS.Zone, it’s easy to try one after the other and compare the two interfaces. It isn’t a game for children or for family play.
For a Sierra adventure in a darker key, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is Jane Jensen’s 1993 mystery set in New Orleans, and it opens on DOS.Zone the same way.
Is Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards Free, Safe and Official?
Can I play Leisure Suit Larry online for free?
Yes. DOS.Zone runs the 1987 MS-DOS version free in a browser tab, with no account and nothing to download. It’s an adult comedy game, so it isn’t suitable for children.
Is this the original Leisure Suit Larry or the VGA remake?
The main listing is the 1987 original, built on Sierra’s AGI engine. DOS.Zone also lists the 1991 remake, Leisure Suit Larry 1: In the Land of the Lounge Lizards, which uses the SCI engine, 256 colors and a point-and-click, icon-driven interface. It’s the second link on this page.
Does Leisure Suit Larry work on a phone?
DOS.Zone shows virtual on-screen controls on phones, but the game was made for a keyboard, so a desktop or laptop is the better fit. We haven’t tested it on a phone.
