The SimCity series

Will Wright’s SimCity came out from Maxis in 1989: a city-building game with no way to win, where you zone land, lay roads and power lines, balance a budget and deal with disasters. SimCity 2000 followed in 1993 with an angled view, underground pipes and subways, and SimCity 3000 arrived in 1999, published by Electronic Arts, which had bought Maxis in 1997.

The series continued with SimCity 4 in 2003 and SimCity in 2013. The original game’s code was later released as open source under the name Micropolis, which is why the first SimCity can be played freely today.

The browser versions listed here

  • Micropolis (SimCity Classic): the original 1989 SimCity through micropolisJS, Graeme McCutcheon’s JavaScript port of the open-source Micropolis code.
  • SimCity 2000: Maxis’s 1993 sequel in its original MS-DOS version on DOS.Zone.
  • SimCity 3000: the 1999 game in its original Windows version on DOS.Zone.

The DOS.Zone versions open in a new tab, with nothing to install, no account and no ads.

Which one to try

SimCity 2000 is the one most people remember, and it’s the best place to start. Micropolis is the pick if you want the original game, legally free and open source. SimCity 3000 is the most detailed of the three. All three are played with a mouse, so a computer works best. For other building games, try Caesar III, SimTower or RollerCoaster Tycoon.

Playing SimCity in a browser: questions

Is browser SimCity official?

No. Micropolis is the open-source release of the original game’s code, played through a fan’s JavaScript port, and the DOS.Zone versions of SimCity 2000 and 3000 are unofficial. None is made or endorsed by Electronic Arts.

Which SimCity is free and legal to play in a browser?

Micropolis (SimCity Classic) is open source, so it’s the safest choice. SimCity 2000 and 3000 on DOS.Zone are unofficial and could be taken down at the rights holder’s request.

Do I need my own game files?

No. All three load everything themselves, so there’s nothing to install.
