About The Lost Vikings

The Lost Vikings is a puzzle-platform game developed by Silicon & Synapse and published by Interplay Productions in 1993. Silicon & Synapse is the studio that went on to become Blizzard Entertainment. Ron Millar designed the game, and Charles Deenen composed the music, with Allister Brimble handling the Amiga version and Matt Furniss the Genesis one.

Instead of a single hero, you control three separate vikings, and each one has different abilities. They have to work together to get through each level and find their way back home. Wikipedia lists both single-player and multiplayer modes.

The Super NES version came first, in April 1993 in North America and on October 28, 1993 in Europe. Amiga and MS-DOS versions followed the same year. The Genesis release came out in January 1994 in North America and on May 19, 1994 in Europe, and an Amiga CD32 version reached Europe in 1994. Blizzard itself published a Game Boy Advance version in March 2003, and on February 20, 2021 the game came out worldwide for the Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Blizzard, now owned by Microsoft, holds the rights.

How it runs in your browser

The Play button opens dos.zone in a new tab rather than loading the game here. On that page, js-dos, the open-source browser version of DOSBox that DOS.Zone develops, starts an emulated PC and boots the MS-DOS release. DOS.Zone hosts the files, so you won’t install anything, supply your own copy or log in, and its pages carry no ads. The listing is tagged platformer, action and puzzle, and it holds a 5-star average from 62 player reviews.

The game has a multiplayer mode, but there’s no online play on this listing, and the page doesn’t say whether two people can share one computer. Check DOS.Zone’s page if you want to try that.

Bear in mind that listings like this can vanish. DOS.Zone removed GTA 1 and 2 after Take-Two asked it to, and the same could happen to any game on the site.

Controls and devices

The game was built for a keyboard and mouse. DOS.Zone doesn’t publish the key layout for The Lost Vikings, so look through the game’s own menus before the first level to learn which keys do what.

On a phone, DOS.Zone gives you virtual on-screen controls, but with three characters to manage, a real keyboard on a desktop or laptop is the better fit. Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed.

Who it’s for

It suits puzzle and platform fans who like to think through a level rather than rush it, and anyone curious about the studio’s work before it became Blizzard. A year after The Lost Vikings, Blizzard released Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, the first game in the Warcraft series, and that also runs on DOS.Zone. For another 1993 puzzle game, try The Incredible Machine.

Is The Lost Vikings Free, Safe and Official?

Can I play The Lost Vikings online for free?
