About Disney’s Aladdin

Disney’s Aladdin is a platform game developed by Virgin Games and published by Sega for the Genesis, where it came out in North America on October 19, 1993, and in Europe three days later. It adapts Aladdin, the 1992 film from Walt Disney Animation Studios. You play as Aladdin and make your way through side-scrolling levels built on the film’s settings and scenes.

David Perry directed the game. The design team included David Bishop, Bill Anderson, Tom Tanaka and Seth Mendelsohn, and the music was by Donald Griffin and Tommy Tallarico. Robb Alvey, Patrick Gilmore and Sacha Tait produced it. After the Genesis release, Virgin Interactive Entertainment published versions for MS-DOS, the Amiga, the NES and the Game Boy. The Amiga version reached Europe in January 1995. NMS Software made the Game Boy and NES versions, with THQ publishing the Game Boy release in North America, and a Game Boy Color version by Crawfish Interactive, published by Ubi Soft, followed in 2000.

One point causes confusion. Capcom made its own Aladdin game for the Super NES, and that is a different game. This page covers the Virgin Games version only. DOS.Zone hosts its MS-DOS port, which the site dates to 1994.

How it runs in your browser

There’s no download or setup. Pressing Play opens DOS.Zone in a new tab, where js-dos, an open-source version of DOSBox built for browsers, emulates an old PC and starts the MS-DOS release from files stored on the site. You don’t create an account, you don’t supply any game files, and the site carries no advertising. The listing has a five-star average from 290 player reviews.

Aladdin is a single-player game, and the listing has no online features. Nothing on the page says whether your progress is kept once you close the tab, so it’s safest to plan on short sessions.

Controls and devices

The game is played on the keyboard. DOS.Zone doesn’t list the controls for this one, so check the game’s own option screens or the notes on its DOS.Zone page before you start the first level.

DOS.Zone’s description says you can also play on a phone with virtual on-screen controls. The game was designed for a keyboard, though, so a desktop or laptop will be easier, especially for timing jumps. Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed.

Who it’s for

It suits people who grew up with the film or with the Genesis game and want the Virgin version again without an old console or PC. The Disney story and cartoon setting also make it an easy pick for younger players, alongside other family-friendly classics such as LEGO Island.

Is Disney’s Aladdin Free, Safe and Official?

Can I play the old Aladdin game online for free?

Yes. DOS.Zone runs the MS-DOS version of Disney’s Aladdin in your browser for free, with nothing to install and no account.

Is this the Sega Genesis Aladdin or the Super NES one?

It’s the Virgin Games version that started on the Sega Genesis, played here from its MS-DOS port. Capcom’s Super NES Aladdin is a different game.

Does Disney’s Aladdin work on a phone?

DOS.Zone says you can play it on mobile with virtual on-screen controls. The game was made for a keyboard, though, so a computer is the easier way to play.
