About Mega Man X

Mega Man X is a platform game that Capcom developed and published for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It came out in Japan on December 17, 1993, in North America in January 1994 and in Europe, where Nintendo published it, in May 1994. It was the first Mega Man game on the 16-bit console and the first in the Mega Man X series, a spin-off from the original Mega Man games on the NES. Tokuro Fujiwara produced it, and Yoshinori Takenaka, Keiji Inafune, Sho Tsuge and Masayoshi Kurokawa designed it.

The story is set a century after the original series, in a future where humans live alongside Reploids, robots that can think, feel and grow like the people who built them. Many Reploids turn destructive and are labeled Mavericks. You play X, the last creation of Dr. Light and a member of a military task force called the Maverick Hunters. With his partner Zero, the last creation of Dr. Wily, X has to stop the Maverick leader Sigma from taking over Earth and wiping out humanity. DOS.Zone’s description adds boss fights, abilities you collect from the enemies you defeat, and upgrades along the way.

Rozner Labs ported the game to MS-DOS, and that version came out in North America on March 10, 1995, packaged with a six-button game controller. A Windows release followed in Japan in 1996, and later versions reached mobile phones, Android and iOS.

How it runs in your browser

When you press Play, DOS.Zone’s Mega Man X page opens in a new tab. The site runs the 1995 MS-DOS port in js-dos, an open-source build of DOSBox made for browsers, which stands in for a mid-1990s PC. Because DOS.Zone hosts the files, you don’t install anything, bring your own copy or register. The site carries no ads.

The listing is tagged action and platformer and rated 5 from 7 player reviews. It doesn’t mention saving, so find out how progress is kept before you settle into a long session.

Controls and devices

The PC release came in a box with a six-button controller, but DOS.Zone doesn’t say whether a gamepad works here, so plan on using the keyboard. It doesn’t list the key layout either. Check the game’s own menus, and click inside the emulator window first so it takes your input.

DOS.Zone can show virtual on-screen controls on a phone, but this port was made for a keyboard and we haven’t tried it on a touchscreen. A desktop or laptop is the safer choice, and Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed.

Who it’s for

It suits Mega Man fans who know the Super NES game and are curious about the PC port, and anyone who enjoys side-scrolling action built around boss fights and new abilities. If you want more console platformers that made the jump to MS-DOS, Earthworm Jim runs on DOS.Zone in Rainbow Arts’ PC version, and Ubi Soft’s Rayman from 1995 is there too.

Is Mega Man X Free, Safe and Official?

Can I play Mega Man X online for free?

Yes. DOS.Zone runs the MS-DOS version free in a browser tab, with no account and nothing to install. It isn’t made or endorsed by Capcom.

Is this the Super NES version of Mega Man X?

No. It’s the MS-DOS port that Rozner Labs made in 1995, running in an emulated PC. The game first came out on the Super NES in December 1993.

Can I play Mega Man X on my phone?

DOS.Zone offers virtual on-screen controls for phones, but the PC port was built for a keyboard and we haven’t tested it on a touchscreen. A computer is the better fit.
