About Redneck Rampage

Redneck Rampage is a first-person shooter developed by Xatrix Entertainment and published by Interplay Productions. It came out for MS-DOS in North America on April 23, 1997, and in the UK on May 2, and Logicware released a Mac OS version in North America in 1999. Drew Markham directed and designed it, and Chris Benson, Bill Dugan and Greg Goodrich produced it. Like several shooters of the time, it was built on the Build engine.

The game has a hillbilly theme and takes place mostly in a fictional town in Arkansas. Many of its weapons and power-ups border on the nonsensical, and in some ways it is a parody of both first-person shooters and rural American life. The soundtrack leans on psychobilly and cowpunk acts, among them The Beat Farmers, Mojo Nixon, Reverend Horton Heat and Cement Pond. The game offers single-player and multiplayer modes, and Interplay Entertainment holds the rights today.

How it runs in your browser

Redneck Rampage plays on DOS.Zone, which the Play button opens in a fresh tab. The site boots the MS-DOS version inside js-dos, the open-source DOSBox build it maintains for browsers, recreating the PC the game was made for. DOS.Zone supplies the game files, so you skip the installer and don’t need a copy of your own, and there’s no sign-up. You won’t see ads on DOS.Zone either.

The listing carries a rating of 5 from 282 player reviews and is tagged as an MS-DOS first-person shooter. Its description says virtual controls make the game playable on mobile as well. DOS.Zone doesn’t list a multiplayer room for Redneck Rampage, so plan on playing it alone. Anything the listing leaves out, such as which release it is or how saving works, is worth checking on the host’s page before a long session.

Controls and devices

Use a keyboard and mouse. The listing doesn’t include a control scheme, so the game’s own setup and options menus are the place to look for the key bindings.

On phones, DOS.Zone offers on-screen controls in place of a keyboard. The game was designed for a keyboard and mouse, so a desktop or laptop is the better bet if you have one. We haven’t tested it on a Chromebook.

Who it’s for

It suits players who like shooters that don’t take themselves too seriously, and fans of the Build engine who want to see a different studio’s take on it. If you enjoy it, Duke Nukem 3D and Blood run on the same engine and are both on DOS.Zone, so you can try all three without installing anything.

Is Redneck Rampage Free, Safe and Official?

Can I play Redneck Rampage online for free?

You can play it free in a browser tab on DOS.Zone, with no account and no download. Online matches aren’t part of the listing, since DOS.Zone has no multiplayer room for the game.

What engine does Redneck Rampage use?

It runs on the Build engine, the same one behind Duke Nukem 3D and Blood. In the browser, DOS.Zone runs the original MS-DOS program in an emulated PC through js-dos.

Does Redneck Rampage work on a phone?

DOS.Zone’s listing says virtual controls let you play it on mobile. The game was built for a keyboard and mouse, though, so a computer is the better fit.
