About Diablo II
Diablo II is an action role-playing game developed by Blizzard North and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The Windows version came out in North America on June 28, 2000, reached Europe two days later and followed in Australia on July 6. A Mac OS release arrived that same July, and an OS X version came much later, in March 2016.
The game was conceptualized and designed by David Brevik and Erich Schaefer, who led the project together with Max Schaefer. Matthew Householder and Bill Roper were the senior producers, and Matt Uelmen wrote the music. Development took three years, a year and a half of it spent in crunch. The tone is dark fantasy with a strong streak of horror.
It is a hack-and-slash game at heart. You pick one of several character classes, explore dark dungeons, battle the monsters inside and collect the loot they leave behind while the quest pushes you toward a fight against evil. The original game supported both single-player and multiplayer play.
How it runs in your browser
Pressing Play opens Diablo II on dos.zone in a new tab. The site doesn’t use a rebuilt engine here: it boots the original Windows release inside an emulated PC through js-dos, its open-source build of DOSBox for the browser. The game files come from DOS.Zone itself, so there’s no installer, no CD and nothing of your own to upload. You don’t need an account, and DOS.Zone shows no ads.
The listing was uploaded by @Carter54 and carries a rating of 5 from 56 player reviews. DOS.Zone doesn’t list a multiplayer room for this game, so plan on playing alone. Whether your characters are kept between visits isn’t stated, so check the DOS.Zone page before starting a long run.
Keep in mind that a listing like this can vanish. DOS.Zone has removed games when rights holders asked, as it did with GTA 1 and 2 after a request from Take-Two.
Controls and devices
Diablo II was made for a keyboard and mouse, and that’s the setup to use in the browser. The exact key layout isn’t given on the DOS.Zone page, so look at the game’s own options or the site once it has loaded.
DOS.Zone can show virtual on-screen controls on phones, but they’re a workaround for a game built around a mouse pointer. A desktop or laptop is the better fit, and Chromebooks haven’t been checked.
Who it’s for
This suits players who want the 2000 release of Diablo II without hunting down discs or an old PC, and anyone who likes a game built around fighting monsters and sorting through what they drop. If you’d rather start at the beginning, the first game runs in a browser through a DevilutionX port on our Diablo page. Blizzard’s earlier strategy game Warcraft II is on DOS.Zone as well.
Is Diablo II Free, Safe and Official?
Can I play Diablo 2 online for free?
You can play it free in a browser tab on DOS.Zone, which runs the original Windows version with no account and no ads. DOS.Zone doesn’t list a multiplayer room for it, so treat it as a single-player game.
Do I need the original Diablo II game files?
No. DOS.Zone loads the game files from its own site, so there’s nothing to install and no disc or files of your own to supply.
Does Diablo II work on a phone?
DOS.Zone offers virtual on-screen controls for phones, but Diablo II was built for a keyboard and mouse, so a desktop or laptop is the better choice.
