About Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Square Enix developed and published Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation Portable. It came out in Japan in September 2007, in North America in March 2008 and in Europe in June 2008. Hajime Tabata directed it, and Tetsuya Nomura was creative producer and character designer. The PSP was its only platform until the 2022 remaster, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, which is a separate release and not the game hosted here.
It’s a prequel that begins seven years before Final Fantasy VII. You play Zack Fair, a member of SOLDIER, the Shinra company’s enhanced special forces. His search for the missing SOLDIER Genesis Rhapsodos leads him to Project G and its links to Genesis, Sephiroth and Angeal Hewley. The story runs from Shinra’s war with Wutai through the events at Nibelheim and ends just before Final Fantasy VII begins.
Combat happens in real time as Zack explores. His abilities come from materia, with up to six equipped at once, and materia can be fused into stronger versions. The Digital Mind Wave, a slot-machine mechanic used in battle, can trigger Limit Breaks, and matching sevens give a level-up, so leveling depends on luck rather than experience points. Side missions are taken at save points, and New Game Plus unlocks after the ending.
How it runs in your browser
The browser version is a fan project by Slayoner, built on snuri00’s runtime, which runs the European PSP release with WebAssembly and WebGL 2. Pressing Play opens crisiscorefinalfantasy7.online in a new tab. Nothing needs to be installed, and the host loads the game files automatically, so you don’t need a disc image of your own.
A current Chrome or Edge on a computer is the safe choice. The host notes one known issue: some video scenes show as a black or white screen with the subtitles still visible, so you can follow the dialogue even when the picture is missing. Whether in-game saves last between visits isn’t stated, so check before starting a long session.
This is a single-player adventure, with no online play.
Controls and devices
You can play with a keyboard or a game controller. Click inside the game after it loads so it picks up your input. The PSP had one analog nub and a compact set of buttons, so a standard gamepad covers everything the game expects. Phones aren’t listed as supported, so plan on a desktop or laptop.
Who it’s for
It suits Final Fantasy VII fans who want Zack’s side of the story, and anyone who played the 2022 remaster and is curious about the PSP original. It’s a full action RPG with a long story, so it rewards longer sessions more than quick visits.
