About Beneath a Steel Sky
Beneath a Steel Sky is a point-and-click adventure from the British developer Revolution Software, published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment for MS-DOS and Amiga home computers. It came out in the UK on March 4, 1994 and in North America later that year. Charles Cecil, Tony Warriner, Daniel Marchant, Dave Cummins and Dave Gibbons designed it, Cummins also composed the music, and it runs on the Virtual Theatre engine. Versions also appeared for the Amiga CD32 and Windows, and an iOS version followed on October 7, 2009.
The setting is a dystopian cyberpunk future. You play Robert Foster, who was stranded as a child in a wasteland known as the Gap and adopted by a group of local Aboriginals. He gradually adjusts to life in the wilderness, until, many years later, armed security officers arrive, kill the locals and take Robert back to Union City. He escapes, and soon uncovers the corruption at the heart of that society. It is a single-player game.
In 2003, Revolution Software made Beneath a Steel Sky freeware for PC and released its source code at the same time. Anyone can play it at no cost, and you don’t need to have bought it.
How it runs in your browser
Play opens the game’s page on dos.zone in a new tab. The site starts the MS-DOS original in js-dos, its open-source build of DOSBox for browsers, which emulates a PC of the time inside the tab. DOS.Zone serves the game files, so you don’t fetch the freeware release yourself or set up an emulator, and there’s no account to create. You won’t see ads on DOS.Zone.
The listing is filed under adventure and quest and holds a rating of 5 from 13 player reviews. Its description is brief: it says the game is free to play without registration and can be played on mobile with virtual controls. It doesn’t mention save support, so check how saves are kept before you settle in.
Controls and devices
Beneath a Steel Sky was made for a keyboard and mouse, and as a point-and-click adventure it’s played mostly with the pointer. DOS.Zone doesn’t list the controls, so look in the game’s own menus, and click inside the emulator window once it has loaded so it picks up your input.
DOS.Zone’s virtual on-screen controls let you try it on a phone. The game was built for a keyboard and mouse and we haven’t tested it on a touchscreen, so a desktop or laptop is the safer choice. Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed.
Who it’s for
It suits adventure players who like a cyberpunk setting and a story about a corrupt city, and anyone who wants a 1990s classic that its owner has made free. If dark science fiction appeals, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is another mid-1990s adventure on DOS.Zone. Daggerfall is another DOS.Zone game whose owner turned it into freeware, in that case Bethesda in 2009.
Is Beneath a Steel Sky Free, Safe and Official?
Is Beneath a Steel Sky free?
Yes. Revolution Software made it freeware for PC in 2003 and released the source code at the same time. DOS.Zone runs the MS-DOS version in a browser tab, with nothing to pay and no account.
Do I need to download Beneath a Steel Sky to play it?
No. DOS.Zone loads the game files from its own site and runs them through js-dos, its browser build of DOSBox, so you don’t install the game or an emulator.
Can I play Beneath a Steel Sky on my phone?
DOS.Zone says you can, using its virtual mobile controls. The game was built for a keyboard and mouse, though, and we haven’t tested it on a phone, so a computer is the better choice.
