About Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss is an action role-playing game developed by Blue Sky Productions and published by Origin Systems. It came out for DOS in North America on March 21, 1992. Japan got FM Towns and PC-98 versions in December 1993 and a PlayStation version on March 14, 1997, with Electronic Arts Victor handling publishing there, and a Windows Mobile version followed in North America in May 2002. Paul Neurath designed the game, Warren Spector produced it, and George Sanger and Dave Govett composed the music. It is a single-player game in the Ultima series.
The game takes place in the fantasy world of Ultima, inside the Great Stygian Abyss: a large cave system holding the remains of a failed utopian civilization. You play the Avatar, the hero of the Ultima series, and your task is to find and rescue a baron’s kidnapped daughter somewhere in its depths. Electronic Arts owns the Ultima games today.
How it runs in your browser
Click Play and dos.zone opens the game’s page in a new tab. The site emulates an MS-DOS PC with js-dos, its open-source take on DOSBox for the web, and runs the original release on it. DOS.Zone provides the files, so there’s no installer, no need to own a copy and no account, and the listing confirms you can play for free without registration. You won’t see ads on the site.
DOS.Zone tags the game as an MS-DOS action RPG and shows a rating of 5 from three player reviews. Its description offers no further detail about the game, and the listing doesn’t say whether progress carries over between visits, so check how saving works before you spend hours in the Abyss.
Controls and devices
Ultima Underworld is played with a keyboard and mouse. DOS.Zone gives no list of controls, so learn them from the game itself as you begin your descent. After the emulator loads, click inside the game window so your input reaches it.
The listing mentions virtual mobile controls, and DOS.Zone does display them on phones. A game designed around a keyboard and mouse is far more comfortable on a computer, though, and we haven’t tested this one on a phone. Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed either.
Who it’s for
It suits Ultima fans who want to follow the Avatar underground, and RPG players curious about how a dungeon adventure looked at the start of the 1990s. Warren Spector also produced System Shock, Origin Systems’ 1994 action-adventure set on a space station, which runs on DOS.Zone in the same way. For another fantasy role-playing game from that decade, The Elder Scrolls: Arena is on DOS.Zone too, and it is freeware.
Is Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss Free, Safe and Official?
Can I play Ultima Underworld online for free?
Yes. DOS.Zone runs the 1992 MS-DOS version free in a browser tab, without registration and without anything to install. It isn’t made or endorsed by Electronic Arts, which owns Ultima today.
Do I need the original game files or DOSBox?
No. DOS.Zone loads the game files from its own site and runs them through js-dos, its browser version of DOSBox, so you don’t set up an emulator or supply a copy.
Does Ultima Underworld work on a phone?
DOS.Zone offers virtual mobile controls, but the game was built for a keyboard and mouse and we haven’t tried it on a touchscreen. A desktop or laptop is the better choice.
