About Turok: Dinosaur Hunter

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a first-person shooter developed by Iguana Entertainment and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It adapts the Valiant Comics series of the same name. You control Tal’Set, known as Turok, a Native American warrior who has to stop the evil Campaigner from conquering the universe with an ancient and powerful weapon. DOS.Zone sums up the play as hunting dinosaurs and other enemies across prehistoric landscapes, using weapons and stealth to survive and complete missions.

The game first came out on the Nintendo 64 on March 4, 1997 in North America and Europe, and on March 17, 1997 in Australia. Sculptured Software handled the Windows port, which was released in North America on November 26, 1997, and in Europe the same year. David Dienstbier designed and produced the game, and Darren Mitchell composed the music. It is single-player only.

A remaster by Night Dive Studios arrived on December 17, 2015, and later versions reached OS X, Xbox One, Linux, the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and the Xbox Series X/S. This page is about the 1997 Windows release, not the remaster.

How it runs in your browser

Play opens Turok’s listing on dos.zone in a new tab. This one isn’t an MS-DOS release: the site boots the original Windows version inside js-dos, its open-source DOSBox build for the browser, on an emulated PC. On top of that, DOS.Zone says the build uses its WebGL 3Dfx technology, which emulates a 3Dfx graphics card inside the virtual PC. That’s why the listing is titled Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (3Dfx).

All the files come from DOS.Zone, so you don’t install Windows or the game, and you don’t need an account. DOS.Zone doesn’t show ads. The listing is tagged as a 3D action first-person shooter for Windows 95 and has a rating of 5 from 19 player reviews. It doesn’t give system requirements or say how saving works, so check the page if either matters to you.

Controls and devices

This version is set up for a keyboard and mouse. After the game loads, click inside its window so the emulator captures your input. DOS.Zone doesn’t list the controls, so open the game’s options to see or change the keys.

On phones, DOS.Zone offers virtual on-screen controls, but Turok in this form was built for a keyboard and mouse and is much easier on a desktop or laptop. Chromebooks haven’t been checked.

Who it’s for

It suits players who remember Turok from the late 1990s and want the PC version back without setting up Windows 95 and a 3Dfx card of their own. It also suits shooter fans curious about a game that mixes first-person combat with stealth and dinosaurs. If you want another late-1990s Windows game that DOS.Zone runs in js-dos, try Future Cop: L.A.P.D.. For an MS-DOS shooter from the same year, Shadow Warrior is also on DOS.Zone.

Is Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Free, Safe and Official?

Can I play Turok: Dinosaur Hunter online for free?

Yes. DOS.Zone runs the Windows version free in a browser tab, with no account and nothing to download. Turok is a single-player game, so there’s no online mode.

Is this the Nintendo 64 version of Turok?

No. It’s the 1997 Windows port by Sculptured Software, running in an emulated PC with DOS.Zone’s WebGL 3Dfx technology standing in for a 3Dfx graphics card.

Does Turok work on a phone?

DOS.Zone shows virtual on-screen controls on phones, but this version of Turok was built for a keyboard and mouse, so a computer is the better fit.
