About Jazz Jackrabbit 2

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is a side-scrolling platform game from Epic MegaGames, released for Windows in Europe on May 7, 1998 and in North America on August 12, 1998. A Mac version followed in North America on February 3, 1999. Gathering of Developers was the main publisher of the Windows release, with other companies covering some regions, and Logicware published the Mac version in North America.

Like the first Jazz Jackrabbit, it is a side-scrolling platformer, but it adds more multiplayer options, including play over a LAN or the Internet. DOS.Zone’s description says you can play as Jazz or Spaz. Nick Stadler and Cliff Bleszinski designed the game, Robert A. Allen and Cliff Bleszinski produced it, and Alexander Brandon composed the music.

Extra editions kept coming after launch: Holiday Hare ’98 in North America on November 6, 1998, The Secret Files in Europe on March 15, 1999 and The Christmas Chronicles in Europe on November 25, 1999. On November 30, 2017 the game was re-released on GOG.com together with the first game. Epic Games holds the rights today.

How it runs in your browser

This listing is the Windows version rather than an MS-DOS one. When you press Play, the game’s DOS.Zone page opens in a new tab, and js-dos, the site’s open-source DOSBox build for browsers, runs the original Windows release inside an emulated PC. The files come from DOS.Zone, so there’s no installer, no copy of your own to provide and no sign-up. DOS.Zone doesn’t show ads. The listing is tagged Windows 95 and Games for Windows, and players give it 5 stars from 18 reviews.

DOS.Zone’s description mentions the game’s multiplayer mode, but no multiplayer room is listed for it, and we haven’t tested whether LAN or Internet play works from a browser tab. The page also doesn’t explain how saving works, so check it before a long session.

Controls and devices

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is played on the keyboard. DOS.Zone doesn’t list the key layout, so open the game’s options menu before your first level. After the game loads, click inside the emulator window so your key presses register.

Phones get virtual on-screen controls from DOS.Zone, but the game was designed for a keyboard, and a desktop or laptop will serve you better. Chromebooks haven’t been checked.

Who it’s for

It suits players who played Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on Windows in the late 1990s and want to return without hunting for an old copy, and anyone who has finished the first game and wants the sequel. Having Spaz as a second playable hero gives returning players something new to try. For more side-scrolling on DOS.Zone, Rayman and Earthworm Jim are MS-DOS platformers from a few years earlier.

Is Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Free, Safe and Official?

Can I play Jazz Jackrabbit 2 online with friends?

The original game supports play over a LAN or the Internet, but DOS.Zone doesn’t list a multiplayer room for it, and we haven’t checked whether those modes work in the browser. Treat it as a single-player game here.

Is Jazz Jackrabbit 2 free to play in a browser?

Yes. DOS.Zone runs the Windows version free, with no account, nothing to install and no game files of your own.

Does Jazz Jackrabbit 2 work on a phone?

DOS.Zone offers virtual on-screen controls on phones, but the game was made for a keyboard, so a desktop or laptop is the better fit.
