About Heretic

Heretic is a first-person shooter that Raven Software developed and id Software published in 1994, with GT Interactive distributing the DOS release. It runs on the Doom engine, the technology behind Doom, and moves the action into a dark fantasy world. DOS.Zone’s description puts it simply: you play an exiled elf who battles evil forces with magical weapons.

Brian Raffel directed the game and John Romero produced it. The designers were Michael Raymond-Judy, Eric C. Biessman and Tim Moore, and Kevin Schilder composed the music. Heretic has single-player and multiplayer modes.

The release came in stages. A shareware version appeared in North America on December 29, 1994, and the full version followed in January 1995. An edition titled Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders came out on March 22, 1996 in North America and March 31, 1996 in Europe. R-Comp Interactive published a port for RISC OS, and in 2025 Bethesda Softworks put out a new release that runs on the KEX Engine and adds a new arrangement of the soundtrack, called Tome of Power, by Andrew Hulshult. id Software is part of ZeniMax Media, which Microsoft owns.

How it runs in your browser

The Play button sends you to DOS.Zone in a new tab. There, the site’s js-dos emulator, an open-source build of DOSBox that works inside a web page, boots the MS-DOS game on a simulated PC. You don’t download an installer or bring your own game files, because DOS.Zone hosts them, and no sign-up is involved. You won’t see ads on DOS.Zone either.

The listing goes by the Shadow of the Serpent Riders title and is tagged as an action first-person shooter for the IBM PC, with a rating of 5 from 16 player reviews. It doesn’t mention save support or list what the edition adds, so check the page for those details. Heretic’s multiplayer isn’t offered on this listing, and there’s no multiplayer room for it.

Controls and devices

You’ll need a keyboard and mouse. Click into the game window once it has started so the emulator receives your input. DOS.Zone doesn’t list the controls for this release, so it’s worth going through the game’s options menu before you begin.

Phones get DOS.Zone’s virtual on-screen controls, but Heretic was built for a keyboard and mouse and is far more comfortable on a desktop or laptop. Chromebooks haven’t been confirmed.

Who it’s for

Heretic suits players who know Doom and want something on the same engine with a fantasy setting and magical weapons. It’s also a good starting point for anyone curious about Raven Software’s 1990s shooters. The studio’s later Hexen II, from 1997, keeps the dark fantasy theme, and it runs in the browser too, so you can play the two back to back.

Is Heretic Free, Safe and Official?

Can I play Heretic online for free?

DOS.Zone runs Heretic free in a browser tab, with nothing to download and no account. The original had multiplayer, but this listing doesn’t offer online play, so it’s a single-player game here.

Which version of Heretic is this?

DOS.Zone’s listing is titled Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, the name of the edition released in 1996. It’s the MS-DOS game in an emulated PC, not the 2025 release on the KEX Engine.

Can I play Heretic on my phone?

DOS.Zone has virtual on-screen controls for phones, but Heretic was designed for a keyboard and mouse, and a computer handles it much better.
