Ensemble Studios released Age of Empires in 1997, published by Microsoft: a real-time strategy game in which you lead an ancient civilization from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, gathering resources, building a town and raising an army. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings followed in 1999, moving the series to the Middle Ages, and its expansion The Conquerors came out in 2000.
Age of Empires III arrived in 2005, and Microsoft later released Definitive Editions of the first three games and Age of Empires IV in 2021. Microsoft still owns the series.
Both open DOS.Zone in a new tab, where js-dos runs the original game in an emulated PC. There’s nothing to install, no account and no ads.
Age of Empires II is the one most players remember, with its medieval civilizations and castles, so start there. The original is worth a look if you want to see where the series began. Both are played with a keyboard and mouse. For more real-time strategy, see Warcraft II, Command & Conquer or Cossacks.
No. Both versions are run by DOS.Zone and aren’t made or endorsed by Microsoft, which owns the series. They could be taken down at the rights holder’s request.
No. DOS.Zone loads the game files itself, so there’s nothing to install and no account to create.
DOS.Zone offers on-screen controls for phones, but both games were made for a keyboard and mouse, so a computer is the better fit.
