About Cossacks: European Wars
Cossacks: European Wars is a real-time strategy game for Microsoft Windows from the Ukrainian developer GSC Game World, published by CDV Software Entertainment. It came out in Ukraine on 28 November 2000, in the UK on 30 March 2001 and in North America on 24 April 2001. Alex Dragon designed it, Sergiy Grygorovych produced it, and Andrew Prishchenko composed the music.
The game is set in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries and is shown from an isometric view. It has sixteen playable nations, each with its own architectural style and technologies, and there’s no limit on the number of units you can build. The original release had both single-player and multiplayer modes. GSC Game World still holds the rights.
How it runs in your browser
Play opens dos.zone/cossacks in a new tab. How the game actually runs there is an open question. DOS.Zone’s page doesn’t explain how this build works, and it isn’t listed with a js-dos bundle the way the site’s DOS games are, so we can’t say whether it’s emulated or rebuilt for the web, or what it was made from. What is clear is the practical side: you don’t install anything, you don’t supply game files, you don’t need an account, and DOS.Zone shows no ads.
DOS.Zone lists it simply as Cossacks, with a rating of 5 from 21 player reviews. Its description promises large battles with thousands of units on the field, economic management and city building, several historical nations, and technology research with military upgrades. It says nothing about multiplayer on this listing or about how saving works, so look through the game’s menus before you commit to a long campaign.
Controls and devices
Cossacks was made for a keyboard and mouse, and that’s how to play it here. DOS.Zone doesn’t list the controls, so check the game’s own settings once it starts.
DOS.Zone offers virtual on-screen controls on phones, but we haven’t tried this game on a touchscreen, and a real-time strategy game with armies this size is much easier to handle on a computer. Chromebooks haven’t been checked.
Who it’s for
It suits players who remember Cossacks from the early 2000s and want to see it again without reinstalling an old Windows game, and strategy fans drawn to large-scale warfare in historical Europe. The economy matters as much as the army, according to DOS.Zone’s description, so it rewards players who like to plan a supply of resources before marching out. For more real-time strategy with a historical setting, Age of Empires II runs in the browser too, as does the first Age of Empires.
Is Cossacks: European Wars Free, Safe and Official?
Can I play Cossacks online for free?
You can play it free in a browser tab on DOS.Zone, with nothing to install and no account. The original game had multiplayer, but online play isn’t offered on this listing, so expect to play against the computer.
Is Cossacks in the browser running in an emulator?
DOS.Zone doesn’t say. Its page doesn’t explain how this build works, and unlike the site’s DOS games, it isn’t listed with a js-dos bundle.
Does Cossacks work on a phone?
DOS.Zone offers virtual on-screen controls for phones, but Cossacks was built for a keyboard and mouse, so a computer is the better fit.
